Im not exactly sure, as I dont own a BB tank, BUT wwc's old elos(they just took down) and the other huge one(not sure on gallonage) are BB tanks and they have plenty of chalices in them. I think they can encrust on the glass if you let them but they dont really like "glue/stick" themselves to the glass?

Maybe WWC will chime in and tell us some info!

i like bb so i can keep the detritus out of my tank, no nutrients stuck in any sand. i put acrylic down on the bb so they dont grow on the glass. i would tend to think the growth can be the same versus other methods. for example you can have sand plumbed via another tank.

I run my 120g chalice system and they do awesome, I get great growth rate, I think I have some of the largest grown out chalice in the country . Like kris said really helps in detritus removal

They can grow well just like a tank with sand and I dont think they can stick to the glass but will stick to pvc or starboard. BB or sand wont determine the growth but good stable parameters and lighting and other factors will contribute to a thriving coral vs a non thriving coral.

What I did when I had my BB system, took ant put the plugs that chalices came on,chopped off the plug part, stuck the chalice on a round 4inch tile from Lowes, and they grew on that...easy fragging, easy growing for sure!

Im downgrading my tank next week to a 65,so Im going BB in there aswell, chalices and favias will be on that "tile system" in that tank aswell!

Cool. Well I am not worried about the tiles because I make my own disk super flat and big. Flat enough you can almost break them in half with you hands.

was just at a membes house last week and his tank was stuning. He did have a bear bottom tank. He had a few chalices that are now part of the glass on the bottom of his tank. He's not in the hobby to frag and sell so he doesnt mind.
