My sump is in the basement, so there is maybe a 9' water drop from the first floor where the main tank is.

Where is the best place for the gate valve on the full siphon?

Put it where you can get at it.

As close to the overflow as possible. This way you can adjust it right there and. It have to Run up and down every time.

I use this valve to adjust the water level in the overflow, so I have to be able to see it.

There will still be a full siphon with the gate valve close to the overflow and a 9 foot drop under the valve?

Yes, but it may take longer to purge since there's way more air in there at start up. If I were going to do a basement sump, I'd have the gate valve on the full siphon near the sump, but I'd have a vid cam looking at the overflow so I could watch it and adjust the level. Once it's adjusted, it will pretty much stay stable with maybe periodic minor tuneups.

Maybe I could put a gate valve up top right near the overflow and another gate valve at the sump?

Just do the gate near the overflow, it will purge air just fine. 2 gates is just asking for trouble, and setting up a camera with a monitor to watch the overflow seems senseless. put it behind the tank where you can reach it.

OK, I just learned about this Bean Animal thing the other day.

I'll put one gate next to the overflow like you say.

A 1.5" x 10' pipe full of water will suck the my aquarium into a black hole never to be seen again?
