I finally broke down and. Ought a Nikon camera and Macro Lens. The lens was more than the camera and combined cost a small fortune. I’m not getting good shots with it though. I got some orange filters and it’s a no go. The photos don’t come out good st all. If anyone can give me a few suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

You need the check the white balance. Use a manual WB. Try 10,000 k. Or the highest it will go.

Take a pic , is it too blue ? Add the lightest orange filter. Too blue still ? Use the next densest filter.

Which Nikon are you using? Are you shooting in RAW format? I haven't had any issues without filters (even on auto WB) using the D3400.

His lights may be bluer. Even in raw there's a range the sensor and the a/d converter and processors won't take

I typically shoot in aperture priority mode at ISO 800 or lower if possible. This usually lets me shoot at about f6 but I'd prefer a bit higher (I cant do that without increasing the whites in my aquarium lights). This should yield 1/100 exposure which works out just fine if you cut the pumps in the display.

No sweat Check out a couple you tube vids and get familiar with the camera.

In auto WB it'll just keep compensating for the different color light. You want a WB that doesn't change.

You use a set WB correct ?
I think that's the issue.

Nope, I use auto and then correct to 16200 in Lightroom. I still need to set a manual light balance that works well (had it figured out well with the Pentax but haven't messed with the Nikon much). 10,000k was money with the Galaxy S7 though :)

Straight from camera

With post processing (very true to real color)

My lights are running about 18k right now (mostly blue as they start to wind down for the night; 35% color and 23% intensity). That was hand held with no changes to anything (manual focus).

so I just took this on the iPhone with orange gel filter. I can’t come near this with $1400 in camera equipment. I obviously don’t know how to use the camera but am so overwhelmed trying to understand it.

Try settings similar to what I posted above. I was using the kit lens on the above images so you'll be able to capture a lot more detail than I did. You'll have to open the aperture a bit more (or shoot at higher ISO which I wouldn't recommend) if you're trying to get closer without cropping.

So when you take the picture it looks real blue until you light room it?

Honestly , try the manual white balance.
The closer you get to true
Color and good exposure, the fewer probs you'll have. You'll also have more lattitude in post processing.

In the example above, yes. I was too lazy to dial it in and had the range available in post processing. This was shot on my Pentax K-r and had no post processing other than cropping; as saltyfilmfolks posted, once you dial in the white balance you'll be fine. That picture of the anthias above had no post processing either.

I have a canon and I set me lights near 20k mode (on my led tank)
I put a piece of white acrylic in my tank and adjusted my whiteblance as true as I can....Look on youtube how to set your white balance in your camera.
I use manual focus and basically just adjust iso and apeture until I get a clear photo
I use the camera in video mode so the preview is on my screen, then I zoom in 10x and adjust my manual forus.
zoom back out to 1x and snap a pic.

You can then use Adobe light room to adjust the photo as you please
I typically only adjust: Temperature, white/black, shadow, clarity and a tad of vibrance.
I try to get the photo as close as it looks in my tank.
hope this helps
