What width are red sea roll? Is not interchangable with clarisea? It would be nice to have option to pick different micron ratings

What about a small strainer inside the sock with a small mesh to collect heavier junk that can just be dumped and plopped back in ? I'm building a sump and I'm ok with a roller only because the schedule for sock change is intense. How often will you be cleaning them ? Do you just buy a crap load ?

I have probably 20 that I soak in a bleach bucket, then pressure wash with r.o all at once, probably every 1.5-2 months, it's alot of work though I don't enjoy socks day at all, i dont recommend it ;) ....

If I were building a new sump now.....I'd get something that could accommodate both, or I'd go forward with the roller system! they are just getting better with time. I assume they will replace filter socks as the standard one day.

I have an Aquamaxx that I purchased several years ago, when Marine Depot was around, before BRS bought them out. BRS still carries them. They are reasonably priced and the rolls are much less expensive than other brands. You couldn’t pry this this out of my hands or tank. I love this thing.

I have a 120 gal tank, I want a filter roller and not sure which to get, Red Sea 500? Clarisea? Theiling? Anything bad about these units?

I have had both the Red Sea and Smarter Reefs, they both work great.

I switched to a Smarter Reefs roller/skimmer and like having just one thing to mess with, and not having to clean a skimmer cup weekly.

Also, cheaper aftermarket filter rolls are available from Precision Converting for both Red Sea and Smarter Reefs.

I have a new in-box Reefmat 500 if you are interested.
For context, I bought a second 500 because I thought my first one broke, turns out I just fried the power supply, so I borrowed the new in-box Reefmat power supply for a week until a replacement power supply came in.

Both the ClariSea and RedSea units are great at what they are designed to do. However, you must realize that they were designed to use very different types of filter paper.

According to my aftermarket filter paper guy the redsea is also 50 micron, redsea just calls it 200.

Precision Converting makes aftermarket rolls for all the larger filter rollers. I have purchased their 10, 20, and 50 micron rolls. The 10 micron rolls are just too large in diameter to use, so don’t waste your money trying them (Steve did warn me it could be an issue). However, I like both the 20 and 50 micron rolls. I use the 20 normally for nice, clean water and the 50's when I’m on vacation so the tank sitter doesn’t have to mess with the roller as they last pretty long.

Reefmat1200 going strong since 2023 on my 500g woth 45+ fishes. Avg 35-40inches daily (last around 60-80 days between roll changes). Use precon filter at $10 a pop 80 micron (no longer available so will try their new 50 micron soon). Best investment ever for me. Wouldn't go back to socks/mesh cups/poly filter

i am using the 30 rating and am having better results than the redsea rolls my water is more polished and im actually using less than i was with the red sea rolls you can visually see it on the rolls its more of a uniform collection where the redsea rolls were splotchy hear and there, i have had 0 issues with the precon and could not see myself ever going back to the redsea rolls

I currently have the Theiling, and honestly really like it. I would say though that if you do not have enough water volume go through it, you end up just having the fleece roll full of dirt and crap sit in the water until it gets super dirty. The more flow, the faster it gets clogged and rolls out of the water. I can't speak for that on the other brands, but for Theiling, that is the way it works. So I'd definitely recommend high flow. I imagine it would be similar for all. However, I love not changing filter sock all the time!
