Hello everyone, I’m 14 and don’t have a lot of money, but I’ve saved $170 aus to get a protein skimmer and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations? Preferably within Australia, so I was looking at an aquarium one g216 for a 150L tank, it seems affordable and reliable from what I’ve read. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

About 40 gal, 91cm (3 foot)

I've had bubble Magus skimmer for years, love it. I would recommend you look at them

Before you go spending money you don't have to, why do you need a protein skimmer? They are definitely not a mandatory piece of equipment.

I understand what you’re saying, but I have had some issues with ammonia and phosphate after going away on holidays. I’m hoping to make the tank a bit more fool proof, and maybe help to do more frozen food feeding. Would it still be worth it?

I think it might be best to share some more info about your system 🙂

You should never be seeing much for ammonia in a running system, and phosphate has a relation ship with rock and sand, and a skimmer won't necessarily bring them down.

Protein skimmers will not help with ammonia that's all tied into your biological system. If you have ammonia showing up on test you have a bigger problem. Which is the presence of nullifying bacteria colonies being not established enough for your bioload.
Now a skimmer will help pull out very small decaying matter that ultimately can turn into a rise of PO4.
As Fish Fan said would you mind giving us some more details of your tank.

I haven’t had any issues recently, but in the past I have, which I imagine was probably linked to my tank being younger and less cultured. I just worry now that I have quite a few corals and I’m looking at getting more fish that I have greater liability and a skimmer might be useful? I also need some new tests too, since theyre going out of date around now, but I figured a skimmer might be a better long term investment, and I can buy tests soon after.

A skimmer is for sure a useful tool, but if money's tight, I just don't want to see you spring for something that maybe you don't need. Lot's a people are successful without skimmer. Many people do find a value in a skimmer, but again, it's just one tool of many 🙂

Tell us more about your system. How long has it been running . Sand bed or bare bottoms . Do you start with live rock or dry . How did you cycle the tank with bacteria, or fish . What equipment do you have . Is the tank an AIO or do you have a sump pump. What is your current love stock in the tank . These are things we need to know to help guide you .

Thank you, and I absolutely appreciate the advice, I just worry about losing more than money in the long run if something happens while Im gone or even by my own error or something like that. After what you said though, I’ll definitely consider different methods for managing the tank without a skimmer. Thank you very much though, I really appreciate it.

About 2 years running, has had some major renovations early on though to deal with some issues, sand bed, mixture of live and dry rock, I cycled it originally with natural seawater and some damselfish and live rock from the little tank I upgraded from (early learning for reefing), I run an external canister filter and chiller and the tank is mostly LPS, leathers and nems.

Anytime we are more than willing to help. If your set on a skimmer don't let us deter you, if that's what you want.
But we definitely need to know a little more about your tank to help you decided which would be a good fit

Thank you, I just sent a bit of a description about my tank above, is that the info youd need?

Ok you run a canister filter so you would need a HOB (Hang on back). I personally have never used a HOB so I couldn't recommend one from experience, but maybe someone else can.
