Best way to safely bring down salinity

I second this. I gave up on refractometer as there are too many variables. Is the calibration solution off? Did it stay calibrated from last time? I too went to the tropic marine hydrometer and learned how awful my refractometer really was
I think that I would keep the refractometer, get a hydrometer and use both to measure the salinity knowing that neither may be right. I would use them each day for a week, compare readings and hopefully find that they both are repeatable and then use them both going forward to maintain stable readings for both and call it good.
