Biopellet Reactor Long-term Shutdown

Is it safe to shutdown a biopellet reactor - ie remove it from my system. Do I need to ween my tank off it's use?

It does act as a bio filter so you might have issues. You could remove small amount of the pellets and see how that effects the tank.
