I run 4 black boxes, SB reef lights to be exact. I’m happy with the setup and have gotten good results but I would like more controllability. So I will up grade to one of the high end led light brands. I also use T5’s.

Bump. Just ordered 2x Viparspectra 165w for my 6 mth old 75g mixed reef. Anybody got more bb tank pics? If anybody has Viparspectras, what settings do you run?

This is my 3.5 year old recently modified viparspectra led lit tank. The tank is only a 24x18x18 with no sump/skimmer run on natural sea water. I run the lights at 55 blue and 5 white 9 inches off the water and with the lenses removed.

This is my new layout.

It cost me less than £20 and about 2.5 hrs work to mod it.

Anyone else use the viparspectra lights still? Iv had them 100%blues 20%whites for almost a year and things started to look like they were going brown expect gsp and a couple types of zoas that were growing crazy so recently I turned it up to 30% whites and according to aponge 200 par meter that's still low and just hitting 180 on my leathers up top I was told that the par meter don't read blue if the numbers aren't correct how do I use it then?

Honestly, I think PAR meters themselves are almost useless with LEDs. I have gotten really low numbers and had corals go nuts and really high numbers and either the same or lower growth out of another light.

Kessils, for instance, don't hardly register unless I put them at color and intensity above 75%, yet they still grow coral.

My modified black box when I had them, showed 300-400 par at 6" under water and were OK but used way more electricity and were louder than other lights. I plan on someday doing another modified set but with quiet fans in an attempt to make them more user friendly.

This is just my experience and my opinion. Been messing with LEDs on aquariums since 2003 and been reef keeping for 31 years.

So my next question is what are ppl using the black box at for settings and heights cuz their are some really nice tanks in this thread there's no way if I ran the light at what others say like 50%blue2% white it would work!?
