Can anyone help me identify these black spots on my marginalis butterfly’s pectoral fin? It’s only on the left side, but has gotten more spots since arrival 1.5 week ago (was present when fish arrived).

This is lymphocystis which they are susceptible to and is viral, not parasitic and will go away on its own. Lympho is a condition and not disease which is viral. Often its associated with water quality issue as simple as elevated ammonia or nitrate and can be that of water from LFS and not yours. Assure to provide Good water quality monitored by a reliable test kit and feed nutritious food with fats such as LRS fish or Herbivore frenzy, plankton, krill and mysis shrimp.

Thank you! For some reason, I thought Lympho was white. He seems to be doing well, eating like a pig and I have been monitoring my water regularly. Also, everything else in the tank is doing well. I will continue to monitor. Thanks again for giving me some piece of mind!!

Pic is pretty blue, but I agree, that’s Lymphocystis. Generally, that virus infects surface skin cells that are gray/white, but in other cases, it infects tissue deeper down and the lesions can be other colors.

No treatment is needed for this, the fish will overcome the virus in a month or so (unless it has some other disease issue).

Here is an article I wrote about it:

Read your article and let’s see - variation of a copperband that I know was treated with Cu. Yup!
