I just read about y'all talking about dosing Ca
Why?
Why not just do WC?
If I'm not mistaken Mg and Ca deplete at a rate of 10x to 25x slower than alk so just keeping alk in line will keep the others where they should be.
Personally I've never tested Ca or Mg, I don't even have those tests.
Does it really matter if your Ca goes from 420 to 400 while your alk goes from 9 to 7?
Just thinking asking out loud, here.
Not trying to ruffle feathers.

It was pretty much explained to me that your tank doesn't have negative effect from Mg or Ca dropping 10 but from the alk dropping 2.0 dkh in that same time that the others just dropped 10 points.
It's the alk!!! Keep alk at your wanted level and the others stay put with the alk.

Hoserbrace. Lol

;Hilarious ;Hilarious ;Hilarious I saw that one coming

@JoshH Congrats on your design taking off! I'm anxious to see your closed loop system too.

To be fair, I don't know that I could call it my design entirely, I drew inspiration from the ONE tank i could find online that had one. It was a small tank though, a cube of some sort. Ahhh heck, forget I said all that, I'll take full credit!

Mornin folks... tried to sleep in because I haven't been able to sleep well, been having strange stomach pains. Hopefully they go away here soon... anyway, neighbor decided 8am was a great time to fire up the leaf blower. They've been at it for an hour.

Hummm sounds like they really want a punch in the face, I'd set the dogs loose after them ;Hilarious

I made 40 gal yesterday did a salinity test 1.026 perfect, checked alk with hannah checker 7.5 exactly.
I love TMP salt!!
Just has somewhat low alk so I spike my brute can to 9.5 and run the tank at 8.0-9.0 dkH. Making WC simple, my alk raises back to 9 every time I do WC.
This has been working well for me.
I start at 9.0 and 6-7 days later I'm at 8.0 and do WC and am back up to 8.8 to 9.0
I know every reef tank is different, but it seems that 7.5 to 8 is where my reef is happiest. When I tried pushing to 10 slowly over 6 weeks my lps didnt open up nicely after 9. I try to stay between 8-8.5dkh

This was my thinking too. I did that for 10 months on a 10-14 day WC schedule and recently discovered my Ca is at 310. That was my Salifert test result after dosing 4ml of Ca for the first time, so it was no doubt lower than that! My Dkh consumption has gone from 2ml a day (about .55 Dkh) to 4ml (1.1) and dosing alk drops your Ca. My hammer corals have been literally growing out of their skin, the skeletons can’t keep up. No choice here that I can see. Oh, and yesterday was the best tank day I’ve ever had!

I dose calcium so the level stays the same in between the water changes , especially becose I dont want to choc my little fellas with water parameters fluctuating rapidly

You got me all excited and then he basically read the instructions off the back of the bottle :/ I’m just going to keep dosing exactly the same way, (but with the corresponding dose of Ca) continue my wc schedule and let things gradually even out. I’m more concerned with the effect of losing an important member of my Cuc and 20+ percent of my fish bioload. Nevermind how amazing the blenny poops were! He would go up to the top of the tank and take a poop shower in high flow areas, it would go everywhere. Literally crop dusting my corals. If I get rid of my wrasse, there goes another 20% of my fish load, and will completely change the biome of the tank because he’s keeping the little critter populations at a minimum. Every time you change something in a small tank you get a mini cycle...this is incredibly frustrating, I was so happy with where my tank was at. Now I have decisions to make (again!) that I thought were behind me.

If anyone outside of reefing ever saw the stuff we talk about.

I’m sure it will even out over time. How large is the delta again?

That’s the absolute worst.
