Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

@crusso1993 funny you brought that up (thank you btw!) Andrew got to visit the Middle School on Friday. The STEM program teacher asked his name and said "you have a spot on my team".

I recently sold a bracelet to help pay for the tank (honesty in Reefing), and I got Andrew the Arduino mega starter kit to tinker with this summer. I assume this will lend in him building a controller?

The STEM team would be very cool for Andrew!

reef pi uses no Arduinos. However, an Arduino mega starter kit will still be a great endeavor for Andrew! (I did not capitalize "reef pi" as that is the intended use of the creator of the project, Ranjib.)

Here is the link to reef pi main page. You will notice that the guides are listed in reverse order 7, 6, 5, and so on. I bet if you pointed Andrew in this direction it would keep him busy indefinitely!

I am not really tech savvy. I have to Google the hell out of each thing to figure out how to piece something together. I can do it, it just doesn't come easy. What does the PI use? Maybe I can find him something to tinker with.

I edited the above post to include this link;

It is a step by step build and user guide for reef pi. The "pi" part comes from Raspberry Pi which is the main brain/controller for the system.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Back at ya! They turned the Chicago River green yesterday, as they always do, in observance of St. Patrick's Day. Chicago is routinely voted best St. Patrick's Day city in the nation as there are 3 parades and a multitude of other happenings.

I'm going to Google that!

Wow! That is awesome!!!! I assume I can order parts easily online?

Without any problem whatsoever! There are parts lists along with links to buying the parts in the build and user guides. I could also help with that as their are a number of part upgrades I would recommend.

@crusso1993 they even have touch screens for RP! Oh how cool!

There's about everything control related you can do with reef pi. @Ranjib really thought the system out very well and definitely deserves bigtime KUDOS for all things reef pi!

I will definitely take your advice.

@Katrina71 - another tidbit; the reef pi (Raspberry Pi) system uses Python software which is a coding software system that runs on top of Linux. While Linux is quite more user-friendly than other coding systems, Python is very user-friendly and would prove to be a wonderful resource for Andrew to learn. More and more companies/systems/technologies are moving to Python based platforms.

There are also some "hats" that one can use on the reef pi system that are designed specifically for reef pi. They were developed by other members of R2R. IMHO they are really worth the few extra dollars and simplify things greatly. One such hat, which I highly recommend, is made by user @Michael Lane .

I'm going to start looking for things he can learn for both.

I would love to use my Google Home Hub as a controller interface on the nano... but that thing is seriously limited on what apps you can install. It's just basic stuff like Pandora, Spotify, YouTube and Netflix... I've searched the interwebs also and I dont see anything on jailbreaking them either.

They used to do the Savannah River like that. It's supposed to be the biggest celebration on the east coast. I've never made it down. I bet McDonough's and Kevin Barry's are elbow to elbow...
