Hello, reefers!

Requesting some help from the anemone experts.
Have a BTA that’s been in just a week now and I’ve noticed that every night with the Radion AB schedule at 60% intensity that when it comes to the kind of “late afternoon” in the schedule it deflates and then over the night it balls up.

It openes again perfectly fine and happy full of bubbles throughout the day. Wondering if there is a way to keep it open at night as I’ve heard some do and wondering if this is all normal behaviour?

Mine deflate to remove waste in a ring around their base. They also deflate partially to move. If you are feeding heavy in the first week, then it’s likely waste removal at night. I wouldn’t worry unless you see it deflated for a significant period of time, over a few hours. Then I would start to take action with water changes.

It does it all night everytime.

The ball in this picture is not mine but the orange one is. Also, what is my orange anemone is it the red tipped one?

Retracted and balled up are not the same as deflated. Imagine a rubber ballon get smaller as we get air out of it. That is refracted. Now imagine one of the plastic ballon (not elastic) got 75%+ air let out of it and it crumble. That is deflating.

As far as I know there isn’t a way to keep them open other than keeping the tank lit 24/7 and that’s defo not a good idea. It’s absolutely normal for them to close up overnight, it’s how they act in the wild. The clownfish will learn to get tucked right in and the nem will ‘allow’ enough of itself to stay open to just cuddle them, it’s really quite sweet. I also love seeing the different colours of the BTAs when they close.

P.s. you said they’ve only been in a week, they haven’t properly settled yet, their behaviour will be all over the place until they do. They are still learning about their new environment, let them do their thing. Nice nems btw, they look good.

Yeah smashing, the green one isn't mine just the orange one with the green looking bottom when it was retracted. Wondering what type of BTA mine is?

all BTAs are entacmaea quadricolor. Single species anemone that comes in hundreds if not thousands of colour combos, you can just about pick a colour, add a tip colour and that will be one. Same species. Not important what it’s called (cuz that isn’t its name), it’s only important that you like the colour of yours and care for it as a entacmaea quadricolor.
