Building a new sump need advice

If it works for you, great! I'm assuming you use a external pump if its in the air. My subversive pump gets hot and had a fan blowing into the return and it did its job. Got 2 fans built in the canopy now as they definitely are more quiet and out of the way. The also help cool the t5 lights a bit.

Nope, not external. My return section is full of air - it's roughly 18 x 18 x 18 but I only run it 10" deep. This is where the majority of my power-out water lands as my baffles are very tall.
I too have fans in my canopy and my T5s are actively cooled to boot
