An Acan colony at my lfs got burned by a torch coral. He told me the frag was a huge gamble so he would let it go for 30. had to swoop on it but I'm a lil worried since I dont have much experience with acans at all. Is there anything I should do besides dipping it, putting it on a plug and placing it on the sand bottom, and crossing my fingers? Is there a chance my 2 peppermint shrimps or cleaner shrimp pick on the burned flesh? Should I feed it? Would strong flow help? I really want this guy to heal up quickly. Thanks in advance.

One more question, I heard acans change color depoending on lighting. I have a metal halide with 4 t5 acitincs. In order for me to keep the orange, should I give it more light or shade it?

I would suggest putting it in lower light with moderate flow. Usually acans heal pretty well. You can try to feed it but I think that'll just attract the shrimp and they'll end up with the food anyways.

Typically acans tend to lose their rainbow under bright lighting. I'd start it off under low light and slowly move it to where you want it, if you start to notice too much change move it back a bit. You'll find the right place for it.

I think it'll do just fine for ya, I've seen acans come back from nothing. You definitely lucked out on this one, the color pattern is pretty amazing.

I know what you mean. seeing really exotic lps at a store and not being able to buy them sucks. Maybe next time i go there, when he's not looking, I'll move some of his acans closer to his torch corals so i can buy them. LOL

Ali's a cool guy but I wish he would frag more of his stuff. I'd spend so much money there. Hell, I might start a new dedicated lps tank if he did.

Beware of the peppermint shrimps. Mine went after my acans and I had to take them out.

scary. I'll be keeping my eye on peppermints. tentacles are coming out but I noticed last night a bunch of pods hanging out at the base. didnt look like they were eating the acan but it did look like the base receded a little more the next day. I read somewhere herer that a guy had a problem with pods eating his chalices in the past. Any suggestions on what I should do to keep the pods away? Will they just go for the damaged flesh or attack the entire acan? the pods never bothered my other acans and chalices. Maybe I should feed the tank more so the pods will go after the fish food? Thanks guys

I want a qt slash lps tank. I had 3 dragon face pipefish in the past to control my pod population but they die easily from infections. heard a uv sterilizer would help a lot for them in the long run. anyways, I did interceptor treatments in the past and the pods always survive. I guess I'm going to have to cross my fingers and hope at least one head makes it.
