I have this micromussa and acan colony that both just coninute to decorate despite me trying to make them happy.

I had a cyano issue, and it was on the skeletons and I think was causing issues. I have dealt with the cyano, I spot geed twice a week. Other acans near them seem fine. But these two I can’t figure out.

They are in a fallow holding tank / quarantine tank while my main display finishes a fallow period for ich. The main display also had a high phosphate issue, but they have been in this tank and mostly stable the entire fallow period which ends in a few weeks.

I’d like to save them but not sure what else to do. Should I frag them to just the healthy heads as a last ditch effort? Any suggestions appreciated.

I would definitely work on raising your calcium and magnesium levels. Shoot for 450 calcium and 1350-1400 magnesium. Phosphates are fine but you will want to raise your nitrates to around 10.

I spent a lot of time chasing my tail with micromussa before just giving up on them.

Hundreds of dollars.

They seem to do well in dirty, low-light LPS tanks. Other than that they just struggle for me and I never did figure out why.

When I first started my tank, they thrived and were extremely puffy (Very low light). When I got more gear and became a better hobbyist with cleaner, stable nutrients etc. they shriveled and died overtime no matter what.

Than from @Tidal Gardens talked about it at one point and said their micro lords struggled until they were in their own system.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. This is my very first micromussa. I’ve had success with scans, so maybe just assumed would be the same.

Thank you. I have been working on getting nitrates up. I was running Chemipure blue, but removed it due to nitrates and phosphates dropping. They are on their way back up.

Slowly bringing MG and CA up as well. My tank seems to use less of them than DKH, so it has swung a bit while I try to sort the dose.

If I'm not mistaken your MG and CA are likely low due to the low salinity of your tank.

1.024 sg is approximately 32ppt. Most people keep their tanks at 35ppt (between 34ppt-36ppt). If you bump your salinity to 35ppt; an increase of 9.4%, your calcium and magnesium levels should follow. 399ppm Cal would become ~436ppm Cal and 1255ppm Mag would become ~1372ppm Mag. So just by bumping your salinity a bit higher, your magnesium and calcium should follow. Your alk will increase a bit, potentially as high as 9.5dKH, which is still a healthy value.

I've seen recommendations for keeping these values:
Salinity 35ppt (1.026 sg)
Magnesium 1350ppm +/-20
Calcium 430ppm +/-20
Alkalinity 9dKH +/-1

It looks like your chemistry should fall perfectly inline just by increasing your salinity :)

Thanks for the tip. I'll get it up on my next water change. One of the local LFS recommended keeping it 1.024-1.025. It swings slightly with topoff, so would be easy enough to just keep it at 1.025-1.026

I’m living this life with my Micromussa as well. As soon as I got the light swapped with a more powerful one my Micros gradually started to shrink. I’ll increase salinity as it had gone down from 1.026 to 1.024. Ironically most everything else is super happy right now.
