C2C overflow vs Drilling for a over flow box

Trying to decide which route I want to go on my 40 breeder. Either way it will be plumbed for bean animal style. I am looking at a acrylic overflow that you drill with the box on the back or going with black glass and doing a almost coast to coast.

The reason I want to do a partial coast to coast is to keep my return line close to the surface to reduce the amount siphoned when the power is shut off. Is it possible to do a overflow like in the picture below? Would RTV silicone hold that in place?

I like the fact that you get increased surface skimming with the partial c2c, should be a lot cheaper and that the tank could be a little closer to the wall. The overflow I am considering has a 3.25" wide box on the back and it just seems that would make it stick out a lot.

Any advantages to going with one or the other?

You can bring the return in at any height and then run a pipe up the the level you want? That will control the siphon and the hole can be at any level.

No, don't use silicone for acrylic, your going to need acrylic glue for that.
