This is my first build. I’m in CT. Best advice for building a stand this size. Recommendations on a custom build. Things that are a must have. People with experience building stands post pics!

I built one for my 135 gal (5’x2’x20” tall). Use QUALITY wood, the best you can afford. Use the sharpest saws you can and screw everything together. Take your time too. It’s a blast!

Here are a few more. Let me know if you have specific questions. This is the 3rd one I’ve built.

@RocketEngineer posted a great design that I’m sure is scalable for a 150. Sorry I can’t find the design but hopefully @RocketEngineer can repost

The original thread is in another forum. Search my name without a space, and stand template, it should pop right up. It’s from well over a decade ago.

Here is the picture most folks remember. The base design uses 2X4 for everything but the red/yellow pieces. The red ones get sized based on tank size and footprint. The green ones are screw strips for simple assembly.

Thank you!! Looks incredible. I have the same sump. Did you use 4x4’s in the corners?

You got some great advice the only suggestion I would make is to use 2x 6's for the upper part of the cabinet pricing. Or 2v 6"s for the yellow and red on the drawing.

The 2 x 6's will give you that your support for the length of the 150

Don’t over think it! 2x4 and plywood is plenty strong for a 150.. I got a 275 sitting on 3/4” plywood with a single center brace and a 2x4 brace on each end.. holds up 3,000 pounds easily..

I’m so over thinking it! I’m nervous bc this is my first build. Good to know though. Think I should use half inch ply?
Your build is absolutely incredible! Tank and stand look amazing and love the sump setup.

If you’re just using it as a skin “cover” for a 2x4 frame that’s fine.. if you’re gonna be screwing into the edges of it if I’d use 3/4” just to help with it not splitting. Of course you wanna pre drill it either way with a tiny bit to keep it from cracking out.

Here is a stand I just built out of only 3/4” birch ply. I’m not an expert engineer but I think it’s agreed these stands can hold up to about 240 gallons of weight. A pocket hole jig is handy for the screws, then you can put wood pegs in there to completely hide the screws. The main thing is glue… do not rely only on screws. The screws are basically just there to clamp the wood together while the glue dries. A glued joint is much stronger than a screwed only joint. This style of stand leaves a lot more space underneath and cleaner than a 2x4 stand… although it does take more time to build.

I’ll add that whatever you do make all of the visible sides able to be opened for access underneath. Mine has a door in the front and the sides are held on with magnets.

It would mostly be a skin but having it somewhat supportive would be a nice perk. I was taking of using oak
