Camera/lens for taking up close and personal pics??

Hey, I am interested in possibly getting a camera so I can get some good shots of my tank and inhabitants :D Any recommendations? I am not very big on cameras and have practically no knowledge about them haha

Nikon D3200 or 3100 cheapest DSLR or a smaller camera like coolpix..You will find when you get a camera you will want to shoot macro. Macro= more $ macro lens and so on.,,,And what budget you working with. I use a D5100 love it have a older macro lens and look down box..Selling 5100 for the D800 hopefully this year.
Dont know how to explain this,,do not just go buy any camera. Because DLSR is little pricey it will cost much more money buying one crappy camera after the next. Believe me looking at go pro, some other garbage with underwater housing, iphone, little canon digital.. gopro $300 other one was $225 little canon $200...All not a total waste they work but I WOULD HAVE BLOWN IT FIRST ON DSLR..Now i have stack of useless cameras.

It is possible to get decent shots with a camera phone or most any other point & shoot camera, you will just have to work harder to get them. Manufacturers can only pack so much functionality into a small unit. DSLR's will give you the most options. You will have better control over things such as aperture size and shutter speed (both are important in photography). You will also have greater control of the flashes, both on and off the body. The DSLR will allow you to change lenses to meet whatever situation you are shooting, be it macro shots of your tank or long telephoto shots of a local sporting event. The best thing you can do is decide what you want the camera for (and remember you will more than likely want to photograph other things), set a budget and do lots of research. When you decide on a camera that you think you like, go to a store and try it out. Some cameras will feel better in your hand than others. Make sure the function buttons are easy for you to reach. Comfort and ease of use are VERY important and are often overlooked. The two big manufacturers are Canon and Nikon (I shoot Nikon), but there are others out there as well. Be sure they offer a variety of quality lenses and accessories.

When asked for advice on cameras, I try to get folks to buy a DSLR (if you get into photograhy, even as a hobby, it is usually what you will end up with anyway) and I point out that the money should be spent on good quality lenses and a remote flash unit. Good lenses start at about $400 and can go well into the $1000's, but they will last forever and, as long as you stick with the same manufacture, will fit the next camera body you get (and the one after that too). The same is true for the flash units. Buy a cheap camera body to start with, you can upgrade to a better unit later and still use the lenses and flashes that you purchased. Make sure it is comfortable in your hand, you will be holding it a lot! Pont & Shoot cameras are hard to hold steady (see photos). You will get better quality shots from a stable platform.

Get a camera and start shooting, it is a GREAT hobby!!

I bought my camera last November having never used a dslr before & I went in & purchased a canon 600d with the 100mm macro lens & couldn't be happier with the results I get, I do not edit my photos either they are straight from the camera. Having a friend to help was my best way to learn how to use the camera better.

Thanks everyone!. I will have to do some research then! What kinds of lighting gets the best pictures for color?? I have 3 radions over my 125 sps reef, so I can basically change the color to anything :D
