Can’t keep euphyllia

Why is that I struggle so much with euphyllia? Everything in my tank strives for the most part from, acros, montipora, zoas, alveopora, galaxea, stylophora, smooths skin acros and soft corals. But euphyllia? Nope.

I did have a frogspawn that did well got up to 20 heads. But for the last two months it hasn’t extended well and has even lost a few heads.

Put in a splatter hammer frag a couple weeks ago and it did fine for a couple weeks. Today, it’s mostly closed up too. I just don’t get it. Tank is mature and everything else does well for the most part.

The Frogspawn may offer a clue. Has coral congestion affected the flow that used to be there? I know acros are succeeding and they need even more, but they may have it available where they reside up on Mount Olympus but not in Euphylliaville down in the valley.

I am going through the same thing right now. All but one of my torches is now gone. All my other euphyllia is struggling, and I went through this once before. I did notice a slight calcium drop, but not so much that it should have caused all this.

I figure if the acros are going well, parameters, minor & trace elements should be good enough for Euphyllia, so ICP may not be a priority in OP's case.

Check your parameters also. When my alk ran out. It dropped. I didnt notice it until the hammers were shrunken in. My dkh was 5.5 by that point.

Hammers and frogspawns are the easiest to keep compared to torches. I had them in 60 nitrates and as low as 1 for extended periods of time. Key is to not make and changes fast.

What are your current nitrates at? Sometimes they can get finicky just trying to think here. Are you dosing iodine? Rarely do I see iodine super high. And has your alk always been that high? I know many people have success with a higher alk I’ve just found out overtime it soemtimes can be a problem IME. Have you noticed bjd at all or no? Maybe a flow issue. If those are answers are right then sometimes you can just get unlucky with the piece. In the past I’ve gotten some euphyllia that do great and some don’t, or start off great then die over a few months when everything else is fine. Soemtimes can just be one of those things

I’ve been gradually lowering my alk. It’s at about 8dkh now. Nitrates are about the same. I was dosing Isol8 MT and I believe that’s where the iodine came from. I’ve since stopped dosing it and am dosing iron, fluorine and manganese separately.

To be honest I’m starting to suspect that I have a peppermint shrimp who may be doing things at night. I also had a large acan with about 15-20 heads that was doing great and abruptly started looking horrible as well. It also died. I’ve really watched my filefish and foxface and haven’t seen them picking at anything so far.
