So I got this starfish today from an lfs and they called it a red spike starfish. It was in the coral tank, so I assumed it was coral safe. Now I’m not so sure just trying to find more info.

Well crud…. Thank you. I tried to find the exact star to do a quick research before I purchased but couldn’t find it. There seem to be many variations of names in this hobby for sure.

Not reef safe, but will likely die of starvation regardless. Starfish in general just don’t do well in aquariums (some brittle and serpent stars do well though, so if you really want a starfish….just stay away from the large green brittle stars, they are fish killers).

Well it’s definitely my bad, as I just assumed they were safe cause it was kept in a croral display tank…. I’ll likely call and see if the store will trade him for coral or something.
