I have a montipora and acropora that appear to have tissue necrosis. I have no clue what this is from, and has become prevalent in just the past couple days. I was fighting Dinos a couple of weeks ago, dosing No3 and Po4 to get these at a more acceptable level. Po4 has been sitting around .06ppm-0.11ppm for about the last week. Could the stabilization of my Po4 and No3 be the cause to the necrosis? FWIW, my dkh has been constant at 9.9dkh for close to a month.

I have been feeding a lot of coral food (trying to supplement my Po4). Could over feeding cause the necrosis??

One other thing I just thought of as I was writing this… I did use some Joes Juice the other night on an aptasia… I didn’t dilute the solution on accident. Could that potentially be the cause?

I’m a bit lost as to why it’s happening. My only thought is the influx of nutrients, but that doesn’t totally make sense.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Just my opinion, your PO4 value are not cause for RTN/STN.

I routinely run PO4 at 0.1-0.5 ppm…

I had issues when my PO4 values dropped, going from 0.05 to 0.02 ppm.
I run my Alk at 7.5-8 dKh, yours is high for my comfort. There are reefers that run at those levels so I don’t think that is the issue.

Your issue may be related to some element being elevated… I had unexpected RTN and ICP results showed that my K was elevated S depressed etc… I was using ionic unbalanced system, once I switched to balanced system the issue disappeared.

It could also be the Joe Juice, I am not sure what it is made out of.

Good luck,

I have always ran my alk at a higher range. For the life of the system, it has been stable, except for a water change a couple of months ago (bad batch of salt from Tropic Marin; that is beside the point).

I plan to do a WC today and see if that can't help get things settled. I haven't done a WC in a month, maybe longer due to fighting dinos. I do dose AFR, which in theory should be replenishing those trace/minor elements that may be the cause of this.

Would it be worthwhile to do an ICP? The system is roughly 8 months old. I did read you should hold off on an ICP until 1.5yr-2yr of life. I just can't put my finger on what it could be, which I suppose would be the benefit of doing an ICP test. I am obviously worried for my other SPS to start showing signs.

Just my opinion, it is unlikely to have bad batch of any salt. I been reefing for 6+ years and so far none of the potential bad batch issues resulted in actual bad batch.
All of these manufacturers make lot of salt in each batch, so the likelihood of one bucket being off is remote.
If you suspect there was issue you can always contact TM, they are quick to respond.

I do use TM Pro Reef and that salt is designed to mix to 7-8 dKh, closer to sea levels of 6-7 dkh.

I don’t see why you need to wait for 1 or 2 years to do ICP. In my opinion it is good to get a baseline and do follow up ICP to see how things change. Frequency is up to you, I used to do it monthly now every 6 months.

AFR is good system, if you use to increase Alk it will increase other ions like calcium etc… so great at maintaining reef tank, not best choice to adjust Alk or Calcium…

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on an ICP-MS test through Moonshiners. Hopefully that can help dial in what my system is too heavy in, or too low.

The batch was bad. I have contacted BRS about it and was refunded. The alk range was well below the advertised value (4.9dkh at an sg 0f 35ppt).

I don't use AFR to increase alk, or calc, or mag, or other trace elements. I use it strictly for a daily dose to replenish what my system is taking in.
