I see it in different pictures when searching for explanations of my weird gimmicky sump that came with my used Elos mini 20.
I'm hoping someone knows what the heck this thing is.

It almost looks like a filter sock with a pipe in the middle? If so it's your mechanical filtration and to cut down on noise and splashing.

So it's just a pipe?

The return is on the opposite corner of the sump. How does that even work?

That is a filter sock and you attach your overflow hose to it to bring the water from the main tank to the bottom… how were you planning on getting the water to the sump?

Yes I know what a filter sock is, I'm talking about the grey pipe looking thing above it.

This is not a pic of my sump btw, it's a picture from Google.

Also the return line is the gray hose on the opposite corner.

I think it looks more like the gray pipe is the return pipe. The left with the mini ato pump is just your ato storage.

Edit: I mean the accordion type pipe in the back. The one over the filter sock is basically to silence and lower the splashing.

The gray pipe that is circled and has little arrows pointed at it is not a return pipe. The lighter gray hose at the top right is the return.
I think John may have had the right idea. Can't explain what else it could be.
Here is another picture off Google

That is strange. How does water get into the sock? the "pipe" looks capped and is not attached to the drain. I have no idea what that is for or how it works but I am interested in knowing.

The second photo doesn’t show that red button thing on the pipe. Tho it’s cut out I’m not sure if there’s a cap on it. If you have the used set up, can you show how it looks like?

Is this what your looks like? Like @Sumbub said do you have better pics of yours if you do have this thing?

It appears as that's how your "skimmer" feeds water to the filter sock.

Water seems to come down from the tank into sump and then drawn into the skimmer and split out through the neck into that pipe then down through the sock.

The used set up came sans weird pipe. It is why I am asking what the heck it is, lol. Wondering if it is something I need to somehow find and buy.

This is how I am running mine at the moment. I will be making adjustments to it later today when I get home from the office.

Ah I see, seems like the case has been solved. This sump is so stupid to be honest. I think I am gonna go eshopps nano sump or the Icecap one as soon as I can.

Ha, it is very unique! :) I haven't seen anything like it, but then again I'm fairly new.

BUT, I think you're right, go with a nice sump that works best for you. Can't go wrong with ESHOPPS

My first impression is that it is the water level control (with a filter sock) to tune the skimmer operation , and also to provide a filter after the skimmer is done, or maybe just catch bubbles to prevent salt creep in the sump?

That looks nice. They didn't do a good job on splitting that sump. You could probably flip it once to the left or right and have the ato in front or back so you have better access to the main sump areas. How it looks currently makes it feel cluttered and a annoyance to doing mainenance.

That’s why to get the water into the filter sock the sump will usually have a pipe like that for you to connect a hose from a overflow box.. some sumps have 3 or 2 depending the gallons
