So algaebarn is always out of clean chato. How hard would it be to get some from a fellow reefer and "clean" it. Besides the 10 weeks for ich but for things like aphasia and coral pests what would yall recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Dip the chaeto in Bayer, rinse, rinse and then place into a 5 gallon bucket for 16 days. After 8 days, do another Bayer dip & rinse. Do a 2 gallon water change every day with water from your DT. Remember to provide light to the chaeto.

I dunk my chaeto in fresh water for a couple minutes when I get new chaeto. Not sure how effective it is but it doesn’t hurt the chaeto.

No need for the 10 weeks in QT with chaeto. There's nothing for Ich or velvet to encyst upon. There could be pods in the water, that's what the Bayer will take care of as well as lots of other hitchhiker critters. Here's Humblefish's thoughts on this subject:

"The chaeto itself is only likely to carry free swimmers - inadvertently stuck on the plant in a droplet of water. Those will be gone without a fish host to feed upon in 48 hrs (for ich) or 15 days (for velvet).
However, chaeto often comes with pods and those have a hard exoskeleton which could theoretically host the tomont stage. So, I would use a coral dip and make sure no dead pods are left behind."

Chaeto only carries things that happen to land in it or move into it. Pods, bristle worms, etc. Just give it some good dunks in FW or even a soft rinse to kill all that stuff off. Inspect. Keep it in a tank that you can inspect and light it for a while. Bayer seems overkill IMO as a freshwater dip will be just as toxic to saltwater pods as any medication we would usually dose in a coral dip.

True in deed, how long can chato survive in FE, I mean I could leave in FE over night
