Hi!

I got a new Candy Cane today and its not looking very good. The water in the cup was very cold when it arrived and ever since I put it in my tank, it seems to be peeling and oozing some long strings. Can someone look at the video and tell me if its done for? Can it come back from that? Is there anything I can do to help it?

Place in low flow and light. Feed a bit of reef roids and observe and perhaps scare the shrimp away from it in case it starts picking on the candy cane. Once it recovers, place it back to where you intend it to go.

Agreed with above, give it some time to acclimate and adjust.
The strings/slime is probably just from it being stressed in shipping.

In my experience, it's a pretty robust coral. I've had some come back that looked way worse than yours does. albeit those were from trying out a peroxide dip, and the other was dropping corals into another tank I have with different parameters. That said, if you ordered from a reputable site/seller, I recommend communicating the concerns with them about the packaging and it arriving cold. An iodine-based dip could help with recovery.

Hi! Thanks so much! Will do! It's since started looking a lot more melty, but Ill keep a close eye on it. At what stage do you think I'd need to pull it? Could it dying crash my tank? (It's only 100l)

The flesh will peel off or bail from the main body. From my experience, with that many heads, you'll save a couple or more as the candy cane will bail the weaker parts to preserve itself.

Yes, this morning I woke up to my entire tank being covered in glowing chunks of Candy Cane and the heads looking very sad lol. Crossing my fingers one of them makes it.

Most of the other corals from the same delivery died too (rip Hellfire). Much sad. Gonna contact the seller.

It wasn't a store but a private seller. There was a heating pack, but it was insultated boxes inside of a larger cardboard box and only the large box had a heating pad (not the insulated boxes) and I just dont think it was enough? The big box was warm, but the inside of the smaller boxes were really cold.

Do you think I should try and take a head off? Or just leave the entire thing in there? Super worried about my tank crashing. There was one torch and a hammer that both bailed their heads also. And an SPS that is peeling too :crying-face:

A dying coral won't crash your tank, don't worry about that. We've all had (many) corals die in the tank, I've never heard of a tank crashing due to a dying coral

Well, I know that sometimes when things aren’t good they separate them to see if one of the heads will make it and save some of it.. and is that all happening now? Have you done your testing?

Yes, did all my testing and everything's good. I also got a second delivery of corals on the same day (from a different place), and all corals from the second batch are doing great. It's just these ones that are all either dead or dying (besides one mushroom and one sps and one hammer that is looking like a maybe). Much sad :(

Oh wow, yea get in contact with the seller.. so they know how you ended up getting them… and maybe wait 4 or 5 days to see how they react maybe they need time.. but atleast the seller knows beforehand what’s happening..

That heating pack needs to be in the box with the coral. Usually they are taped to the styrofoam. That coral received no heat from that heat pack unfortunately.
Yeee I assumed this was the case. Such a shame. Told the seller and gonna keep an eye on the survivors. Thanks!

Little positive Candy Cane update! A lot of the bigger heads died, but many of the smaller ones survived and they no longer look melty!
