Canister filter

Hi everyone,I'm sure I may get negative feedback on this but I am using a canister filter. What is your guys opinion on this?

I use cannister filters as high flow cryptic refugium. I load them with reef rubble & any matrix to colonize on.

I pursued most of your threads. On which system are you using a cannister and what purpose do you wish to achieve?

My hammer is in older tank in a 29 gal nano. The one I'm using a canister on is a 90 gal. It's doing good. I'm into mostly soft coral and some spa
I'm still new to the hobbie so sps I'm not set up for. I don't have correct lighting for sps. My new tank I uses 40 lbs of live sand with 60 lbs of crush coral. In with the hammer I have a gonapora and a blast or with a high long tenticle anemone. It's a frog spawn not a hammer I believe tho. I'm sure I will have a very few amount of fish. Fish is my lady's thing. I personally just love it all. I'm trying to seed my tank early with tisbe for a mandarin. My ladies favorite. Can I have a population that will reproduce with a canister is something I'm wondering? Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I'm using a jbj pro 2 reaction 175 with built in uv. It seems to be nice so far. Very quiet. I have a ridal 110 hang on back also just for now because I have lots of good media from other tank and from a friend's tank. I just wanted to introduce the most good bacteria as I possibly could.

Kudos to your success with Gonapora.

I would not expect the cannister filter to supply enough copepods for a mandarin. If you can hold off on adding fish, allow the live rock & live sand to become established with copepods before adding fish.

That's my plan. I just didn't know if the canister would suck them all out of my tank.

I added about 2500 tisbe yesterday. My guy raises them at his shop.

I will disassemble a canister filter in the next week that has operated for 2 years.l

All 3 of my filters have LR rubble, with just one sponge at pump intake.....I clean out (quick rinse in old SW once a year)....thats it. No other maintenance....
NO3 average at 15....(I do run a dirty tank for my softies)...

Any suggestions?

You need to provide biological, mechanical, and chemical filtration for your tank. The canister filter is one way to help with that process and what you put into the filter will impact which of those types of filtration that you will be addressing with that tool. It can help to step back and consider what tools you are using to provide each of those types of filtration. For example, rubble rock can provide biological filtration and filter floss can provide mechanical filtration, however, those may or may not be the best approach for your specific system.
