I have a 30g with a protein skimmer. Is a canister filter also necessary

I think most people shy away from the canister filters for reef tanks because they turn into nitrate factories. How much live rock do you have in your tank?

I have a fluval on my 50 gallon tank. I clean it every 2 months. I use carbon, phosban . Haven't had any nitrate issues

+1 say no to canister filters for a reef tank.
