Canisters, good or bad.

Running tanks w eheim cansiters for 20 plus years NO PROBLEMS had sumps Overpriced acrylic boxes and hard to up grade w equipment due to baffle placement and socks are a PAIN IN THE Butt to keep cleaning.
 
I believe it depends on the size of your tank. 6ft and bigger, a sump would be more cost effective. Under 6ft and a canister is probably the best way to go.

+1 vote sump because you can also put/hide other equipment inside it but a canister is just a canister (and takes up less space as a result)
