Captive Bred Regal and Multibar Angel

Are any of you able to provide a February 2024 update on your multibars? I am very much considering one of these. Also, I haven't fully read through this thread, but what is the QT procedure on these fish? I am a strict QT with copper, but I am guessing that won' work well with CB multibars?

You shouldn't have to QT them if they come straight from Biota, they're from a biosecure facility.

If I'm being honest, I stopped buying them because they all came in smaller than a penny and paper thin. Some I would get eating for a few months, others died within a week. They should really hold onto them for a bit more growth before selling them.

That's a shame. My lfs gets them once in a while from Biota and they are much larger than that. I'd have to QT from there tho.

It pecked at mass stick a little, and kind of casually went after the pellets it was advertised as eating, along with PE frozen calanus and other crushed frozen foods. After a few weeks I just stopped seeing it. Very disappointing and probably the end of my CB angel purchases until they come in at more reasonable sizes.

This & This. Biota is doing wonders for the hobby long term. But it’s diminished as soon as they let a >2” angel leave their care.

I really hope they succeed long term. But that has to be an adjustment.

Poma is 2-2.5” before you see an angel leave their facility. They’re all impeccable, FF/dry eating & as advertised when they do.

My Biota multibar which i have posted on this thread previous is doing fine. I got it at maybe 1.5 inch. Still small and grows slow but is the runt among my 3 other Biota angels that i dont QT. Purchased directly from Biota. All are doing great. I have never lost a biota purchase.

Biota does not breed multibar angels.

People keep mentioning biota and blaming them but Bali Aquarich breeds the multibar. Biota simply imports them and offers them for sale. the regal angel is also Bali.

I would do live rock for these baby fish and no medications at their size unless absolutely needed. They won’t do well in meds at this size.

I think this is the most important take away as it relates to captive bred or raised fish.

My limited experience is that they do better in isolation and observation than going through standard quarantine protocols that use medications or change water chemistry. They are small and young. While eating prepared foods I've found that they do best in mature refugiums or similar setups that provide a natural environment to forage.

I buy direct though so mine have not run through the supply chain or LFS waters.

100 percent, mine went into a 20g fudge and then into a 25g macro tank and thrived growing out in there.

it's still around 2 inches with 8-9 bars now ( 6 bars at beginning )

Just to add another data point to this. I recently received a CB Regal Angel through an importer that had sourced from BA.
It came in small, very small, and very thin. It looked vaguely comical as the body was so thin behind the relatively big eyes.
It was supplied with some food that it apparently been eating, but the pellets were actually larger than the size of the mouth.
I tried mastic, lobster eggs, ground pellets and ground flake. It was very shy, and so I couldn’t really see it eat that well in the quarantine tank, but I did see it pack a few times.
Unfortunately after five days, I found it dead

Like stated in this thread, they do seem very very small and I do wonder if another month in the breeder or importer would help the hobbies survival rate normally.

Quite sad.
