I found Elimi NP very effective (1.2 ml /110g). I stopped the GFO and my phosphates did go up to 0.2-0.1 ppm and my nitrares are around 5 ppm. More importantly, my corals are happy . I also dose KZ sponge power to promote sponges growth. I have a lot of very heavily fed fish, no water changes and corals are mostely lps (I have two small sps corals that also started growing). When my phosphaye go below 0.1 I will start adding the NP bacto-balance mixed with the elimiNP.

Good point. I guess I don't really care where my alk is, just as long as it's in range. I keep mine around 8.5 but that's due to using TMP. I'm ok with it going a bit higher with the IO. I just can't get TMP locally and am tired of filing claims with UPS for busted salt.
I've been using IO for 40+ years, with an 850 gallon system on auto water change, those expepnsive salts are impossible to afford. I order my IO online through Chewy ( No where ever cheaper ) free delivery and you set it up on auto delivery. I ordered salt from them 4 years ago and set up auto ship. I pay $11.00 for a 50 gallon bag ( Yields 46 at 1.026 ) I haven't ever ran out and I always have a few bags in reserve. my Alk in my tank runs right at 8.8 - 8.9. No refugium, carbon dose tropic marin and auto change 45 gallons per week. My reef has transformed in the last year and I owe it all to Neptune Apex Monitoring. Once I monitored the tank for 6 months, then I started adding Apex control. My 850 gallon reef is now steady as a rock. I just ordered new lighting Black Friday. 6 New Radion XR30 G6 lights with all mounting hardware and rails. I have a feeling I'm going to be trimming corals every month starting January !!!! My reef is 21 years old this year, did a complete tear down and bleach bath and hard reset 5 years ago. Until this year with the addition of Apex, this tank is finally almost zero work and headache. Stay slow, stay focused, & stay consistent. Everything else follows in step. Happy Reefing

Wow fantastic tank! I just added the IO 50 gallon bags to my Chewy auto ship order. Don’t know why I didn’t think of that, I get stuff from chewy all the time for my dogs.

This reef is hard to photograph because it’s14 feet long. Thanks for the kudos

Time for an update. Stopped the GFO for the last week and my nitrates are 42 and phosphate 0.33. Not great but I’ll keep dosing the elimi NP for the next few weeks and hopefully it goes down.

Haven’t seen much of an impact yet. Nitrates are 43 ppm and phosphates are 0.46 ppm. Still creeping up. I’m had half the max dosage for elimi NP, 0.5ml for 50 gallons. I’ll up it to .75ml and see how that goes.

Weekly update. Changed ~20% water on Sunday, tested nitrates at 29 ppm and phosphates at .53 ppm. I'm a bit worried that the phosphates keep rising even with the carbon dosing. I might start GFO again if it keeps going up. Any thoughts?

I'm thinking of starting to dose Elemi NP. From what I've read you keep increasing the dose every week or so until you see the numbers start to drop. Then you ease off once you get there. I will have to guess to keep at it. Also read carbon dosing isn't fast but when its dialed in it works. Slow and steady wins the race and also avoids bacterial blooms and algae.

I have been increasing the dosage for the last month. Im up to the max recommended dosage of .5 ml per 26 gallons. My nitrates are dropping but phosphates are still rising. Im going to start GFO again to get my phosphates down.

Weekly update. Nitrates at 28 ppm and phosphates at .12 ppm. Corals are looking pretty good and minimal algae so I’m good with those number.

I am still on Elimi NP 2ml per day 110g. My phosphate is between 0.2 to 0.3 ppm and not decreasing. Nitrates are around 5 ppm. I do have algea growing but my lps corals are looking very happy. And my 2 small sps montipora and acropora actually started growing. So... nothing to fix

We’ll after months of neglect I’ve finally had time to get my reef under control. After many many water changes I got my nitrates down to 40 ppm and phosphates to .08 ppm. I started dosing tropic Marin NP bacto balance a week ago. My nitrates have gone up to 48 ppm and phosphates to 0.2 ppm. ill be doing a 30% water change tomorrow but I was wondering how long carbon dosing takes before you start seeing results? I dose 1ml in. 50 gal tank. Thanks.
I think you need to start with ElimiNP to get the levels down, then maintain lower levels with Bactobalance…that’s what i do and it works great. Carbon dosing takes at least a month to settle in.

Thanks for all the input. So should I keep dosing the bacto balance or would it be better to go with vodka instead? I’ll work on getting my nutrient export under control. Interesting thing is that with the high nitrate and phosphate levels I have near zero algae just on the glass after a week or two. Unfortunately I don’t have a fuge, wish I was able to fit one. Had one on my last tank and it was awesome.
I think NOPOX and ElimiNP are very similar and what you should be using with higher levels. I’ve used them all, they all work. Carbon dosing doesn’t eliminate the need for good maintenance, it works along side it. IMO, once dialed in, its a much better option than a refugium. There’s no macro algae to suck up your trace minerals. Be patient, still do water changes, etc., carbon dose every day (preferably auto with a doser) and it will pay off down the road. Switch to bactobalance once your levels are where you want them

I’ve been using ElimiNP for a couple of months now. Seems to work well for nitrates but not as well for phosphates so I started GFO again to get those down. I’ll continue with the NP for another month or so and then switch to the bacto balance.

Weekly update. Nitrates down to 19.1ppm. I'm pretty happy with that since I only did a 10% water change. Phosphates are creeping up again at 0.25ppm but I will change out the GFO next weekend to knock them back down. Going to continue to use the ElimiNP for another few weeks and see where my numbers get.

Took a little over a month but my nitrates are down to 15.0 from around 50. 0 using NoPox. Time to start decreasing as to not bottom out. Has not made a dent to phosphates. which are sitting at around 0.60. I filled the Reactor with Rowaphos again to try to help bring them down.

Nice. I’ve noticed the same thing. Carbon dosing can bring down nitrates but not much help with phosphates.
