Cardinal fish pair or 1

I recently got a bangaii cardinalfish. Are they better in pairs or should I keep this guy alone.

I've only had a solo since I have smaller tank and want some variety. It's been a good citizen. Earlier on before I calmed down the clown fish (removed from tank for a few weeks) it would hide in back more. Once clown was out started being much more visible and that kept up after the clown was reintroduced months ago.

They do very well as 1. Yes most of the time you will see them in a Pair but they can do great by themselves
