I got a full bred Siamese from a rescue. Also have had Maine Coon and Russian Blue and Bengal from rescues. There are All kinds of cats in rescues. No need to pay the breeders.

Just Google Russian Blue rescue. You'll see tons of them.

I was actually on the same thought several years ago when I had to give up my ex's siamese...clingy, loud and wonderful cat!
I had the local game warden bring three 4 week old rescue kittens to my work. I didn't realize my boss grabbed the white/gray siamese looking female. I took the jet black brothers.....one is siamese shaped and mannerisms to match. The other has more burmese traits, even fetches once in awhile. Both are loud and clingy.

Louie and Kit were a different sort of rescue. They were surrendered to the emergency clinic as found kittens at a day old. They are normally destroyed but Jeanna raised them.

I have 3 Bengal cats (one from a shelter) because I wanted hypoallergenic cats too. Keep in mind that does not mean allergy free and that each individual cat allergen level will vary and it will change from kitten to adult.
I have had Bengals where I could rub them in my eyes and snort their fur if I wanted with zero reaction and I have one that triggers allergies almost as bad as a regular cat. Most are somewhere in the middle to the lighter reaction side.
I would suggest whoever is allergic spend time at the breeders with the adults/parents getting covered in their dander. The kittens will likely not be a good measurement. Same goes for if you adopt.
If you get a kitten I would suggest trying for a bonded pair (some kittens will bond closer to each other than random brother/sisters) as cats do like company and a playmate for when you are gone.
Choose a good breeder if you don't adopt... No Craigslist kitties. You get what you pay for and you want a kitten who's parents have been proven to be free of genetic defects and bred ethically. They should be able to provide you papers as well.

On the same topic about adoption here in Massachusetts more people must be aware of allowing their cats to breed unwanted. Finding a full breed was hard for me.
But what is it about the need for animal shelters so much? Do we have a part of the population who think allowing cats to breed like crazy and giving away kittens to people who have an impulse is awesome? I dont know anyone who does that anymore. Sad to think about. Maybe it is a bigger problem in certain parts of the usa?
Does adopting from a shelter just keep reinforcing the issue? A good breeder is not part of that problem. People who pay 350 to 1200 for a cat are not going to abandon it in most cases. I thought they were the good folks?
I will admit I am not up to date on the issue now days.

To be honest I think the more rural you go cats are considered less as pets and more working cats, lots of barn cats up here in Vermont. Much like people who get into reefing with little knowledge, cats become feral/stray because they are put outside and treated like "wild" animals and not fixed. Don't want a litter box in your house...easy, let them poop outside....not the best practice IMO.

There's good and bad to everything. Most solutions are not 100%. I think animal shelters and other similar facilities try their best to raise awareness and educate people on the issue at hand :) But what you point out is critical to consider if we aim to improve the effect of such facilities.

No matter what is the right thing the wrong thing will always happen. Lots of people do not spay and neuter their animals. I've especially noticed this in dog owners to be frank.
Then when people have more than they want, or can give away, they dump them off at shelters or just outside.
However, there are lots of people who give up their animals for various reasons, moving, poor health, a new baby, etc. Not all animals in shelters come from bad homes or are strays.
The fact is that there are more animals in shelters than could ever be adopted. Getting an animal from a breeder perpetuates the problem.

Again, Google a pure bred breed. You'll see just how many of those owners have abandoned their animals. A lot! Just because you pay for something does not mean you will value it.

Here is a few of mine. Not sure what kind of cat but she’s adorable when she wants to be. “Hiding“ behind the shower curtain and laying on the patio table waiting for me to come home.

My tortoise shell looks like yours ! Twins ?Im the same with a dog. Wont get one till I retire. Have 3 cats. Please consider a rescue cat. There are so many that need homes. We have 3 and they are all great cats.

Heres a pic of my British Blue. Not sure if they are hypoallergenic. Dont see Russian Blues in the UK much. Oh and he plays fetch like a dog and steals socks from the bathroom. Strange kitten

Just adopted this cat Minnie. She’s 16lbs and thinks she’s a princess.

My girlfriend and I run a shelter from a home. we will have four kittens up for adoption around Christmas were in Central Florida area. we also live trap and then spay and neuter then release.to cut down on the local population. If anyone is interested shoot me a PM and I will send over pictures.
