Chasing Coral

We did watch this. Still not really sure how to feel. All I can say is I learned a whole new kind of respect for the animals I have in my reef!

Your supposed to have anew respect for animals in the wild...That is the whole point, not the ones in your tank.

Dont get me wrong at all. I grew up in Mass in the wild. Housatonic river in my back yard. I've always had deepest respect for the wild and animals in it. You learn at a very young age you cant shoot a deer because you accidentally stepped on a new born walking through a field as a toddler.
What I meant is love and respect for these animals in our hobby. I've made rookie mistakes and killed a fish. I've put corals in an immature reef tank and I'm sure I lost one or 2 from it. And I've always felt horrible! I see people bleaching out corals. I see some of the stuff I seen in the movie.
What I'm saying is I learned a profound new love and respect for what I'm doing with these animals in my hobby.

It stood out to me that in that doc, algae grew where it was permitted to grow, where coral flesh is missing.

algae takeover never was starved by water params, it had to be actively excluded from the sps branches by living sps flesh to not take over. The water from pristine reefs grows algae, it doesn’t nutrient restrict it at all was amazing.

Agreed.

It simply amazing that people in this hobby want sterile and lifeless tanks yet want to be all natural and identical to a reef in the ocean.

Yet a “Pristine” reef in the ocean has ALGAE. It’s the main and in some cases they only food for certain animals and is just a another cog in the balance of a real reef.

I seen this in my own system when I recieved a gorgonian coral shipped to me out of water. Only took a cpl days and was heart breaking to say the least.
Positive side is we can do our due diligence here and keep parameters correct and help these animals thrive in our systems. Sadly even if the only refs that exist soon are in our own reef rooms!
