Hey folks, I wanted to bounce an idea off some more experience, hoping for some thoughts/ideas, or any red flags you might see. My set up currently is a 90g DT with a 38g sump. In the DT, I have 2 Koralie 3's. In the sump I have a Mag 9.5 returning to a Sea Swirl Unit in the DT, and a Mag 7 returning to some Loc Line on the other side. Drains in the DT are 2 overflow boxes, with a 1.5" drain in each. I am in the process of getting a second Mag 9.5, and a second Sea Swirl unit, with plans to hook the 2 together. I have calculated head loss, and I should be getting 750-800 gph through each sea swirl if returned from the sump, which puts 1600 gph going through a 38g sump. In the sump I have employed a DSB and intend on adding some macro algae for reverse daylight.
So, with this said, I am concerned with sending that much water flow through the sump. Not to mention 1600 gph cannot be handled by 1 1.5" drain, so I lose my redundancy if one of the drains fails, or gets clogged. What I am thinking about doing, is moving both Mag 9.5-Sea Swirls to a closed loop configuration, and leaving the Mag 7 for return from the sump. The problem is, I do not have the luxury to drill, as this tank is already established. What I am planning to do, is mount both Mag's on the top, back of the tank, and run a closed loop from the overflow boxes to the Sea Swirl. I tried this with one, and found the Mag 9.5 drained the overflow too fast, since half the water taken from the overflow back to the DT went down the other overflow. So I am hoping with 1 in each overflow, it will balance them out and prevent an overflow from going empty, and sucking in air.
So I am looking for thoughts. Pulling water for a closed loop from the overflow seems safer than putting the intake in the DT itself. Not to mention it keeps everything except the Sea Swirl return nozzle hidden. Am I thinking about the physics of the water correctly, as far as having 1 pump in each overflow would balance the levels?
