I will be going to college in about 1 year and a half, there is a college in Florida I really like. They have a 20gallon tank policy. There is also a college in Maine and Rhode Island. What was your experience if you had a tank before college or during??

What you're looking for is CoralFish12g:

He's going on his 3rd year of having a tank. He's also pretty good about giving instructions on where to get RODI and what to do during break. Although you'd have to figure out something over winter break (which is ~1mo in college) and summer.

I switched to a smaller tank than the monster I had before and keep it at home so it's easier managed for my parents while I'm away, and when I come home to do maintenance myself. I do go to a university which is only about an hour away from home though, so I go visit the tank most weeks. However, if I don't go home, my parents are fully capable and willing to do the tank maintenance for me.

I think the first thing I'd do in your situation is talk to your family about the possibility of them caring for your aquarium while you're away. If they aren't interested in doing that, you'll have to sell your tank. But you still have a long road of applications and acceptance letters to decide on where you'll be headed, so if you do decide to go out-of-state you'll have plenty of time to find your animals new homes.

As an aside: I don't really recommend setting up a tank in your dorm if you do go to a college away from home. I say this because during your vacations it will be a major hassle to find someone to take care of your reef (because every other student also leaves, and dorms are locked during many holidays to keep them from being trashed by students while no one is managing them, so you'd be locked out from taking care of your animals). That, and during your first year while you're constantly out socializing and doing schoolwork you really won't have time to keep-up with the tank at the same time.
