Would it be safe to convert a 36” long tank to 48” by putting 3/4” thick piece of plywood on top of the stand? The depth of the tank is the same 18”. So it would be 48x18 sheet of plywood on top of a 36x18 stand.
I want to upgrade and would be nice not buy a new stand...mainly because I don’t want to deal with selling the current one.

I wouldn't do it. All 4 corners of the tank need to be supported all the way to the floor.

I suppose if you didn't mind the looks you could put 2x4 at the 4 corners. The stand in the picture also appears to be resesed, so you'd need a way to support that as well.

It would probably be easier to get or make a new stand.
