Cooler days ahead: Do you make seasonal changes to your tank?

In some places it is already cold and in others the cooler weather has just arrived, but for most of us there is a seasonal shift in temperatures. Autumn may trigger thoughts of fall cleaning or prompt us toward regular preventative maintenance. The season may also push us away from chillers and fans and toward thinking about heaters and other changes due to the cooler weather. As you experience fall and whatever that looks like for you, please let us know if make seasonal changes to your tank?

I live next to a large lake, so the lower temperature seems to reduce CO2 in the air and tank ph goes up. I open the windows for a few hours a day. Even with windows open in summer, the ph is lower, so the tanks really like this time of the year.

My lagoons in a Morton building so I makes sure the propane tank that heats it is full. I put heaters on my skimmer air line intakes so they don’t freeze up. Clean/ inspect the air exchanger and the dehumidifiers. once the propane heaters kick in it causes way evaporate more in the winter. Basically I really worry most about humidity. For my reef and other tanks in the house I don’t really do jack besides heat the skimmer air intakes

great thread. curious what everyone else does too

I don't change anything but I definitely make sure I have replacement heaters. My fish room is in our basement so that's a must for me here in Wisconsin

I set up the kerosene heater in the fish room for the negative overnight temps and inevitable week long cold front that means the house never quite gets warm enough.
Double check the pile of backup heaters are still working.

Deliberately? No.

But I do have a skylight in the room and I run several of my tanks without heaters with a minimum room temperature of 25c. This does mean that temperatures rise and fall a bit with the seasons. And I have had both coral and anemone spawning events occur on rare occasions during the summer months.

No changes.

Central A/C and an Inkbird with 2 heaters takes care of the temp, whether it’s hot or cold outside. And I don’t believe in deferred maintenance, so I do small water changes every 2 weeks and clean my return pump and gyres once every 4 months. No matter what.

I’ve always found stability to be crucial for success, and this approach helps me stay there.

I need to bump temp .5 degree to maintain same summer level.
I take away 1 hour of light and add it back in the spring. Not sure it makes any difference though.
