When only the tip survives will it grow down over the trunk again?or just up from the top?leave it or cut and secure so a new base will grow

It can, but it will take decades to grow over old tissue. Wait for it to grow from the tips a bit... like .5 to 1 inch. Then frag it and mount it to where no dead skeleton is still around.

Even though that is big enough to frag now, I like to wait until they are growing so that I know that they are super healthy.
