Without a picture I would say poop. They only have one opening that serves two functions. Does it look like this?

Kinda. Just like a bunch of slime.

What are you feeding? My torches, hammers and duncans do this with stuff like reef roids when I target fed them it. I took it as a sign they did not like it and were trying to get it off them. They dont do it when I broad cast feed mysis and brine. Other than that I no longer target feed them. The elegance still gets directed feedings of either mysis or brine sometimes pellets. The Torches, Hammers and Duncans catch some bits of mysis and brine every day.

Happens when we overfeed mostly but it can also be coral “poop” at other times. If it is randomly happening not related to post feeding I would pay attention because it could be expelling zooxanthellae because they are stressed from something off balance in the tank.

This is different. These are mesenterial filaments and/or coral digestive mucus

Do a search on LPS expelling zooxanthellae. Should get you what you need.

OP - you said brown stringy so this is what I would suggest looking at. Another somewhat related thing to look for are images of Vermetid snails. During some types of broadcast feeding or say using a turkey baster to blow off the rocks sometimes will send out webbing that can look like snot or stringy things. They can be pretty long to catch food particles in the water column. Snot, mucus, stringy.

In any case both should give you something to go on to confirm.
