Coralline Bleaching. what does it mean? sps tips white

Hello,

i noticed that some of the corals have some bleaching at the tips. my Alk is 7.5 and my CA is 400. so nothing total out of the ordinary. I also noticed that some of the coraline algy on the back glass has also bleached out. see the picture.

what does this mean and what could be the cause of this? is there anything we can learn from this? the corals that have the bleached tips it looks they are are going to die and RTN. Is there a correlation between the bleached tips and the bleaching on the coraline?

Did you change your light at all? If you increased led intensity on your light, you could cause bleaching of coral and coraline.

Are you carbon dosing? If not, then I'd agree your ALK is slightly low, if you are then it's not bad; I would be more concerned with parameter swings. What's your entire chemistry look like: mg, no3, po4, etc.

will test tonight and then report back. I do not carbon dose..my alk is 7.5-8.. i test in morning where it usually goes to 7.5 then i dose accordion daily

Softies and most LPS will tolerate those swings, but most SPS will not. Could very possibly be other issues at hand, but I'd say this could easily be your leading/contributing factor.

ok i tested my parameters and this after i dosed this monrning so alk and calk went up but here it is

Alk swing. mine did the same thing. my test was bad and found out that my alkalinity raised too much in too little time.

Yea, my guess is parameter swings. Make sure you're using quality kits as well to confirm your numbers, but SPS just won't tolerate those swings. Again, some will, and some LPS and most of Softies will, but if you want to keep SPS look into a doser. Also, think about when your SPS grow out, they're going to absorb more and more, requiring more manual dosing.

I've never had an alk swing bleach coralline. Did you change or add activated carbon recently?

Raise your calcium to 430-450 and your coralline should bounce back. Bleaching could be because of lack in nutrients with high light.

Not sure how raising calcium has anything to do with growing coraline. my coraline didn't start coming back until my calcium was closer to 400 to 420 which I brought down from 450. I do agree with the lack of nutrients and high light can cause this as well.

I suppose 450 is arbitrary but shouldn't inhibit calcification for coral or coralline. I personally like to keep my number up just because my tank can absorb 20ppm of ca a day. But for me, i notice my coralline looses color around the 380-400 range.

For a long time I kept my calcium in the higher end because that's what I was told to do. and then someone told me not to chase numbers so I let my tank decide what it liked and for some reason mine likes the 400-420 range. I suppose there are many other factors involved.

That is perfect example of finding the sweet spot. Our tanks are different for sure. Mostly because of amount of coral and nutrients. But if that number works for you, I see no reason to change. All I know is my sps loves calcium lol
