•Addresses nuisance algae and unwanted waste products such as NH3, NO3- and NO2-

•Maintains low-level of nutrients for a clearer and healthier reef

•Keeps cost down and prolongs cleaning and maintenance schedules

What you’ll need:

Hydronix* HF2-10CLBK12 10" Clear Housing with Black Flat Cap, 1/2" Ports
(Can do multiples units*)
$14.77 [Amazon.com]

Eheim* 2510051 1 Liter Substrat Pro Biological Filter Media (recommended*)
$18.00 [Amazon.com]

Breeze* 63008H Marine Grade Power-Seal Stainless Steel Hose Clamp, Worm-Drive, SAE Size 08, 1/2" to 29/32" Diameter Range, 1/2" Band Width (Pack of 10)
$11.49 [Amazon.com]

AQUANEAT* 160GPH Submersible Water Pump Pond Aquarium Fish Tank Fountain Water Hydroponic
$8.99 [Amazon.com]

Two Little Fishies* ATL5445W Ball Valve for Regulating Water Flow, 1/2-Inch (optional*)
$4.33 [Amazon.com]

Orbit* 1/2in. x 6in. Cut-Off Raiser (optional*)
$0.27 [Lowe’s]

BrassCraft* Nylon 1/2-in x 1/2-in Barbed Barb x MIP Adapter Fitting
(2pcs needed for inlet and outlet)
$1.99 [Lowe’s]

EASTMAN* 1/2-in x 10-ft PVC Clear Vinyl Tubing
$4.18 [Lowe’s]

10” BRS Reactor Refillable Cartridge -Hard Shell
$9.99 [Bulk Reef Supply]

Will cost roughly between $70-75
Though the amount will almost equal to an Eheim Classic Canister Filter (2211), the individual components for this DIY Bio-Filter are replaceable and affordable at the same time.

Orbit* 1/2in. x 6in. Cut-Off Raiser was made optional, only needed for multiple units as a daisy-chain connector.
I also indicated Two Little Fishies* ATL5445W Ball Valve for Regulating Water Flow, 1/2-Inch as an optional component since the pump’s (AQUANEAT* 160GPH Submersible Water Pump Pond Aquarium Fish Tank Fountain Water Hydroponic) flow rate can be adjusted to your preference. Though it would be handy to get one so to avoid getting your hands wet every time you want to make adjustments with the flow rate.

Personally, I dose both Seachem* Stability and Pristine for 7days to kick start the system and do re-dosing after a major water change and or maintenance cleaning.
