I'm pretty sure this is a bad stone crab species but I actually have no idea. I have searched and searched and can't find a matching picture anywhere on the internet.

He was finally in a place I could get a picture and I was able to pull the rock out and get him out of the tank (after almost six months of trying to catch him!), but I don't want to kill him if he's ok .

anyone ever seen this before?

I believe it is referred to as rock crab
My comfort zone is it in the sump rather than risk in the display

Yes it has pointy claws and before it molted recently they looked like they were fairly dark.

unfortunately I don't have a sump, so I'm going to take it to the LFS either for sale or for puffer food. I figure it's better to feed another organism with it than just let it die.

After a quick search, it appears that rock crabs are stone crabs. But Google could be wrong. In any case, it's definitely not reed safe.

Stone crabs is another common term for it, yes
