Cracked Reef Jar

I woke up to my reef jar leaking. It’s cracked somehow, any recommendations on how to patch it? I’ve heard of super glue and baking soda? Here’s a pic.

It’s three gallons I believe

Stick everything in a spare bucket and replace the jar?

Does the jar normally have part of it unsupported? I can't imagine that would help with any stress points, and it might be a cause of the cracking in the first place.

im really shocked, havent seen that before. we should skip cycle transfer it all into a new container as mentioned.


to skip cycle we clean the items before re installing, we wouldnt move over cloudy sand for sure.

No lol, it’s been inside on my desk. Nothing to move as it’s been cycling.

Lowe’s $5 (maybe, but cheap) bucket for now, and replace with a new jar.

that signifies end of cycle, months ago.

what I was meaning is if/when you move, clean out the sandbed ideally and move only clean sand, and the current rocks, and it wont recycle
that live rock was skip cycle live rock from the day you put it into your reef, coralline is present. it spent years underwater somewhere else.

its so new, the sand isn't likely dirty but to clean it doesnt redo the cycle anyway, and is a good habit for any moves. i wouldnt use the cracked tank but try and return it agreed, hold your items in a kitchen container of some type. if there is an api test kit or red sea that says you arent cycled, the test is wrong


in 100% of cases, any live rock with coralline and algae is fully cycled and moving it tank to tank doesnt kill it at all. shipping it might, but not moving by car from lfs to home

that will at least save you any degree of wait or expenditure regarding a cycle, you're dealing with old rocks. move it as you please they'll be fine.

those rocks could be taken, sat out on your counter for two hours, put back in the tank, and skip the cycle infinitely.


some real reefs get air for ten hours daily for millennia, they laugh at two hours exposure in nature comparatively

Man, I didn’t even know that it wouldn’t recycle after moving tanks... now I’m questioning my knowledge hahaha. Thank you!

Man this sucks. I’m all outta cash and I still need a nano heater and good sand. My current heater for my forty gallon won’t fit in the jar. Plus I need legitimate live sand. I’m gonna ask a few family members about odd jobs and try n sell some plants or aiptasia jars at school. Aiptasia jars people think are amazing and will buy. I’ll most likely ask other yearbook students if their interested in one for their desks. I pulled GHA outta my tank today and after it was out of the water and kinda strained I had a golf ball size -_- I’m trying to get my coral out ASAP especially the gorges before the algae takes them over

For the reef jar get a few gallons of Ozarka distilled water about $1.20/gal (i have tried and tested just about all of them and this brand is yet to fail me with a positive ammonia reading due to chloramines) and a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Fill a pail or whatever with some tap water and some hydrogen peroxide and dip the rocks for the reef jar in that. It will kill the gha then rinse the rock. Good water and clean algae free rock for the reef jar and a new start.

I have heard of people dosing hydrogen peroxide to the tank at a rate of 1mL/10 gallon to kill gha but have not tried and not aware of any side effects or if there is any

hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant and may kill your beneficial bacteria. I am not sure though. I have only dipped frags. But if you want a clean start with the reef jar this will do it. And a LFS will probably just give you a bioball or a few pieces of rubble rock from the sump for free to reseed the tank

Is it okay to scrub it lightly with a toothbrush to rid the GHA? Or will that disturb too much of the Nitrifying Bacteria?

Dang, I looked at the one in town but couldn’t find one big enough, I’d like two gallons at the most
