Oh and super glue won't work silicone will but till have to glob it on the inside and it won't look good are you sure the glass is ment to hold liquid? It seems like it might not be thick enough if it's cracking like that.

I also keep a jar reef 2gal. I've had really good luck with the aqueon heaters for something this size, I've had others that were not powerful enough or way too powerful and found this to be a nice middle ground. I tested about 10 different models to see what would work well and this was my preference here's a link sure you can find them other places tho. Wish you were closer I'd trade for one as I bought extras to ttm fish and they just sit here now. Amazon product

The jar has held up since being filled this morning... I’ve had paper towels under it and I’ve seen no signs of leaking...

I mean, it was one of those Anchor brand jars so I was like well they make measuring cups so it should be able to hold liquid.

Makes sense, sounds like you just got a bad one then. I couldn't tell from the original pic and thought maybe it was one intended for dry goods, not that it should leak if it was but sometimes the glass on those isn't as thick etc. The super glue will get very brittle and crack in saltwater where silicone bonds with the glass itself. Not saying you can't get a few days this way but the bond will slowly detiorate so keep an eye on it and keep looking for a replacement or silicone to fix it.

Just make sure you remove the super glue so the silicone can bond with the glass first if you do, other wise your just putting the silicone over a bad bond and not using it to reseal the auctual issue.

So - I looked up a bunch of these jars - a lot of them are 'not' liquid safe (i.e. they are for sugar, etc) - so I would check with the manufacturer before you do anything. Second - Looking at that crack - what is to prevent it from extending outward - much like a windshield - which starts out as a small chip - then ends up extending throughout the window. Super glue shouldn't fix or help this (nor would silicone).

Even if it sits on your porch like that for a week - if you bump it the wrong way - it could be a mess - same thing if its on your desk. Not trying to be a killjoy - but - I would for sure - buy a new jar after making sure what ever brand you choose is 'liquid safe'. BTW. can you feel the crack with your fingernail on the inside or the outside? I'm assuming its outside.

I also agree with Brandon - that you likely don't have much 'cycling' to do - and - all sand becomes 'live sand' with Time. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I couldn't feel the crack on either side, inside or out. I just know I saw water around the base of the jar in the morning and that's the only crack I saw. I would've said Condensation, or the airline tubing created a vacuum... but the Water wasn't cold, nor was the air machine wet.

Agreed, it does need to be fixed with a new jar eventually, just that short term smearing silicone would likely be an ok temporary fix. I would go way over the crack potentially covering most of the bottom personally but also be out looking for another jar that day or the next. Technically you could look into a permanent fix where you drill the ends of the crack so they don't extend and then get a filler but that would likely cost more than the new container by the time the tools, supplies, and time was tallied up.
