Hewbie is swimming upside down!

I need to test. He gets fed daily 3 shrimp or 3 mussels. He has eaten less lately and he has always been this way I just contributed it to him being a different shape.
It sounds like you are feeding plenty, but I can't tell how large he is. If you are feeding Fresh Mussels that could lead to parasite problems (internal) but is probably a long shot. How much Prazi did you Dose?

The mussels were fresh turned to frozen so no parasite should be alive in them.

I notice his buoyancy is all over the place. I tried to gently burp him again and dosed kanaplex in hopes it helps if it an internal parasite. He is mostly eyes down and sideways but still seems to have bouts of swimming semi-normally. I’m not sure there is much else I can do. I’m just hoping he pulls through. @Jay Hemdal

The issue with internal bacterial or parasitic problems is the fish technically need meds to end up internally. And without eating it’s hard to do.

Wrasses have a neurological issue that makes them swim all wired and they end up stop eating. Eventually dying sadly.

I tried to feed him some peas to see if maybe he was constipated he didn’t eat. I only wanted to see because this solved his constipation before and he want upside down but the difference was he had a massive bulge. Even so I didn’t think it would hurt. But my hands and trying to force feed him just stressed him more. He doesn’t want to eat and is staying in the same spot. I just tested to be sure no ammonia and salinity is fine. Nitrates are very high but always have been. Nitrates hover around 60 ppm. This is nothing new or abnormal in the water chemistry compared to how I have run this tank for over 3 years. He is a poop machine and I truly can’t help or control the amount of waste. I truly think this is an internal issue as both medics mentioned. I have been in communication with fish vets and one of the options would be me taking him over an hour away. This isn’t like treating a four legged friend though and nothing has guarantees. I would like to mention all other fish apart from the fluke on the other fish…are acting completely fine. Burping also didn’t help because as Jay mentioned I do think this is a true internal issue. @Jay Hemdal @vetteguy53081

I think my moral question is if there is no recovery for him at what point do I decide to do the humane thing and euthanize him? I hate to say it but I don’t have a lot of hope seeing his rapid decline over the past day and a half.😭

I would defer to Jay here for technical understanding of what may be appropriate, but I think in the end it comes down to what you are comfortable with. I don't know that any of us can guess at his discomfort or yours. That you are asking means your head is in the right place and you are likely to arrive at the decision that works for both of you.

I am sad to see this thread Ayden and wish both of you the best. I know this is tough.

I just want to thank everyone for all the well wishes! I truly appreciate it even if I don’t reply individually!❤️ I will continue to update this thread.

Keep the faith! Hope Herbie will pull through.

I'm sure the other fish pro's can give better advice. But when in doubt, always do a water change, run carbon, and increase oxygenation in water.

I lost a couple fishes recently, and it sucks.

Good luck.

I don't think this is totally true. The pelagic fish project took samples of fish and froze them for later dissection at a place I formerly worked. Those frozen fishes would wiggle alot after the frozen fish were thawed out, sometimes many months later.

Not a fish medic, but could sedating and tube feeding him some medicated food be an option, especially if it's possibly an internal issue where antibiotics could help?

So I disagree with this but also we are talking about something that is frozen for months that isn’t a fish and farmed. There is a reason sushi-grade fish while a marketing term is flash frozen and kept frozen in a very cold freezer. Of course any process including cooking isn’t always going to guarantee you kill 100% of anything as people still get food poisoning from cooked food. Also don’t think it has any cause or relation to Hewbie’s current situation. As I mentioned it is possible it isn’t parasites and an entirely different issue. As mentioned numerous times Hewbie has been treated and always been thing and slender even prior to his mussel diet. This cause I believe to be completely different.

So he hasn’t slept at all in the past 18 or so hours and neither have at least well because I was up all night worrying about him. So now he curled up under the branching rock go to bed especially given that his lights were on all day/night as I watched him like a hawk. It is holding him down in the sand as he has wedged himself under a rock and gone to bed. I am hoping he heals and whatever is wrong gets better.

Ayden, I don't think we've met yet, but I've been following your posts about Hewbie for a while now. I'm rooting for him!

My tilefish was also floating upside down when he got severely constipated and refused to eat for a few days. It was a very scary sight! I built little shelves at several different levels all over his quarantine tank so he could anchor himself better and float underneath them instead of being pushed around by the flow.

He eventually got better after about a week, the constipation cleared out and he started swimming upright again. Hoping for the best for Hewbie too!

In the meantime, this might help: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/causes-of-abdominal-swelling-in-fishes.1098720/
We have not! Thank you for the encouragement and glad your tilefish healed.❤️

Praying for you and Hewbie, you mentioned no labored breathing and no flashing? Is it swimming normally or having trouble swimming? Also did it eat normal? I pray for you!
He is trying so hard to swim and stay upright. Currently after being up for hours as I have been monitoring him and I have dosed various meds but stopped. He is now sleeping. I dosed kanaplex, metroplex, and first defense because his slime coat was slimy and I could see it. I also tried to force feed him while I burped him which I will not do again. I thought he may have had an air bubble but learned that is probably not the case. I don’t think it is air at this point and that is just added stress.

imo if a fish medic isn't sure what to do in this case, no reason not to contact other fish experts out there or even a local vet specialized in exotic fish
I have done this and it is a waiting because if I went that route it would mean waiting until Thursday and physically bringing him somewhere over an hour away which may not be worth it depending on how he is then. I am hoping for the best and that I don’t have to do that!
