Frozen vs. Pellet Foods

Quite the discussion here. I feed Omega one marine flakes and New Life Spectrum marine fish pellets five to ten times daily. I also feed nori and dried seaweed daily. Occasional frozen foods. At night I put in reef roids and reef chili after lights out. My fish seem fat and healthy.

I personally would not feed any dry foods to anything except worms.

Dry foods won't have the essential oils of natural foods, are full of fillers like flour that offer no nutrition and have no living gut bacteria that controls immunity almost 100%.

Just my opinion, but in over 45 years none of my fish have ever been medicated, quarantined or died of any communicable disease and some of them are over 35 years old. 😎

Of course, dry foods won't kill them, it's just not as good and most fish never get dry foods on the reef where they come from. 😊
Flour, blood worm etc. Don't exist in the sea. They are alien foods to sea creatures that evolved differently than terrestrial life. In addition as you mentioned no gut bacteria to keep fish in balance. How many reefers out there take probiotics or drink kombucha. And if you do why wouldn't you offer the equivalent to to tank friends???

You could say that about most frozen foods too. Not all frozen is available in all areas. It’s alien to certain sea creatures too. But the nutrients from what you named and frozen are what is useful imo.

I feed crushed flake and pellets in an autofeeder twice a day, and a frozen cube in the evening. When away, I up the autofeeder to three times a day.

What are people’s thoughts on pellets soaked with selcon? To further fortify them. Close to frozen?

As a consumer of R2R and a participant, it would be great to see this level of scepticism applied (daily) to the fish disease forum rather than being so unnecessarily focused on Paul.

Paul and his method (and his popularity) aren't the problem.

I always fine the argument of “you don’t find X on a reef so I don’t feed it/can’t be good for the fish” a-bit silly. Can you imagine the first human to eat a raw oyster… they must have been very brave or very desperate… and yet all sorts of foods not found in the human ‘native range’ turns out to be fine. Or I suppose for those that couldn’t eat like that died out long ago.
The same for many animals… extreme food speciality isn’t a strength in nature. 99.9 of fish we keep in aquaria will do just fine with either marine fish designated food within reason (herbi/carni/omnivore) all things being equal.

Mcarroll most hobbyists IMO feel they have to only feed something that comes from an LFS. When the hobby started there were no LFSs. The hobby started just after WW2 when I started, and we bought fish in toy stores or department stores.

The only food available then was dry flakes like Tetramin. I also used it as that was the only thing available until I got smarter and was tired of having sick fish. Then I discovered that if I supplemented the Tetramin with live worms, I no longer had sick fish, ich was a thing of the past and my fish started to spawn.

Remember, no computers or internet so no arguements and you discovered everything on your own.
That was circa 1972 or so.

Then the salt hobby bloomed and marketing started as did all sorts of food manufacturers. They were trying to make healthy foods that were also convenient and for the most part they did. But in those days no one knew anything about immunity and fish were always sick so they also produced all sorts of fish medications. Some worked and some just turned the water fluorescent colors. 😬

Many people today still follow the hype and use those things instead of just keeping their fish healthy the old fashioned way, the way fish keep themselves healthy in the sea, but the problem is that that method is free, and no one makes money on "natural" and there is no hype about it except a few Geezers like myself who also don't make any money on it and I don't look like a pretty picture of a French Angelfish like is on the packages of dry foods and medications. 😎

Like I said, it will keep your fish alive and it is easy. Just not if you want your fish immune which, to me anyway, is the goal. To live healthy naturally without depending on quarantine and medications. The best method would be to supplement that dry food with some sort of living or at least fresh food with gut bacteria.

I also realize fish food manufacturers have to make a profit.

Those discussions always cause arguments and I don't like to argue. I'm too old.

I did a lot of what I would call important things in my life. I was a combat Sargent in Vietnam where I was in quite a bit of "unwanted" action and lost many men including 6 of my 7 guys, and in that same battle almost 50 other guys. (There is a book about it) Then I was a construction General Foreman for almost 50 years and that caused all sorts of arguments and sometimes fistfights, so I am over it now. I don't need to argue on a fish site which is not in the least important to anyone except us and the fish.

I don't care what people do, all I can do is try to show how I figured this out half a century ago and being I love the sea and have lived next to it and in it all my life, I hate to see so many people killing so many fish uselessly when to me, it is a no brainer and practically free.

@Paul B have you seen the Australian aquarist on YouTube? I feel you share a similar ethos and I think you may enjoy it. The hobby in Australia, whilst small, is quite different to the US I’d say, for better and worse. I’d like to think mostly for better.

Adam is probably my favorite fish keeper on YouTube! He has a lot of great projects and a great mind. His series on self collecting fish and other stuff from the wild is good fun.

Here is a question relevant to the thread: I have a growing amount of macro algae in the sump - Should I harvest it and throw it out for pure export, or place it in the DT for food instead of dried nori?

Did you mean to have a comma between blood and worm or do you mean bloodworms? Bloodworms are marine polychaetes.

Depends on if your DT crew will eat it or not. If so.. then yes.

Frozen medley of seafood dunked in selcon and beta glucan as wel as New life Probiotic pellets fed by auto feeder. Add Nori on clips 3-4 times a week.

Why beta glucan?
