First things first:
RS Reefer 200XL G2 Deluxe(meaning RS 90 LED not planning to replace yet?)
RS pro salt(blue cap)
Loads more, ill include very soon!

Had ants in my pants waiting for this. Tomorrow is they day for adding the first fish to my first ever marine aquarium!

First of August i dropped a nice fresh jump shrimp from Publix into the tank. Thatvwas a fun experience. Walk back to butcher section. "Hi how can help you?" "Could i have one of those shrimp please?"

Taken aback and not wanting to give bad service the nice lad clarifies, "One? Or one pound?"

"One please!" With a gleaming smile off to the register!

Beep! "I dont mean to be rude i just have to ask why just one?"

"Well unfortunately i have an allergy to shrimp so i cannot eat them. I just want to drop this little fellow into a tank of water and watch him decay." The clerks face quickly turned from intrigue to horrow but before she could respond, "As the shrimp decays it releases amonia into the water which feeds bacteria that feeds....." as everyone behind me in line is in the process of dialing 911 i finish the quick explination of the nitrogen cycle and the fact that i am in fact starting a new aquarium. Her look of horror was replaced again with that of intrigue as she thanked me for the new bit of education. I suggested she look into the hobby while everyone else hung up with 911 and started to applaud.

Ok the apllauding and 911 calls arent real. I dont think anyone was behind me as id have been aware and not wanting to hold up the line. Rest of story is true and was the first time i really got excited for the adventure i was starting.

Obviously i dont have much to show yet. My next post i will get into the startup and equipment a bit more but i thought id start with my first impressions on the lid i received today from clearview lids as i havent seen as much as id have liked before i decided to make the purchase.

I went with the Pisces EXO

Firstly the ordering process can be a bit confusing there were a couple times i inflated the price by including descriptions that werent necessary. ExMple would be where they ask if you want the location of a cutout to be left or right side and i would type in standard center. This assumes a customization and adds an extra charge. So be careful of that.

That said i had ordered a light cut out for my 1 light mount that connects over the overflow which is already cut out. I received an email from them wanting to clarify exactly what i needed including verifying measurements and placement of cutouts and lids and issued a refund for my ordering mistakes that day. So chances are if you blunder the customizations in the way i mentioned in the last paragraph. They seem both capable and honest to catch your mistakes and proactively take care of you.

Big up for that!

45 days to build was my quoted time. Mine shipped the 20th day.... 2 or 3 days before it shipped i sent then an email saying i didnt want to be a bother or try to rush them but i was excited as my cycle was ready and just wondering if there was any update. Response i got was the less than desireable standard stick to the advertised window. But again 2 or 3 days later i got an email that it had shipped(25 days early.) I dont know if my email made them decide to bump me up in the que, i hope not for the sake of others orders but i ordered after reading a thread here saying his shipped on the 9th day.

On delivery(see first picture) my heart sank... no way it survived the way these people handle the post... i wish i could remember but i cannot which shipping method i chose... i cannot even remember if there was an option. Delivery time fro VA to FL 2 days. Opened the package and well they ship these often enough and know better than me how they hold up. No problems!

Getting long winded so ill trail off here and leave with pictures and an invitation to ask any questions if you have about the lid or this tank i will be sharing more about either later today or tomorrow before i head to pick up my first fish!

Cheers all! So excited to have you with me on this adventure.

Oh yeah so first impressions on the lid: 4.9/5
Was expecting feeding lid to be hinged(not that they ever say it is) so down a tenth on the rating. But thats tentative as the way it fits im leaning toward preferring it as it and without any hardware or dowel like hinges in place.

Edit: i just wanted to point out the last picture is the extreme. I had pushed the lid flush to back and right side of the tank. Gap is 1/8" or if you center over tank 1/16" around. Think the say this will be the case on their site. Not a complaint just showing what to expect. Dont think anyone expects or wants a perfectly flush contact point to the glass do they? Oh and sorry for feet.

Sorry anyone whonmight have gotten their hopes up to follow a new build thread. Had a weird set back that has me reevaluating my readiness and wanting ti create better plans for future problems.

I was forced to create this thread the eve of starting this tank. But i cant expect to be prepared for a reef tank if my fw tank i thought was good is running into problems. I wont let this thread die just as i wont my fw tank and wont haltybreef tank but itbwill be slowed for another month or two while ibprepare better.

Cheers all!

So one of my setbacks was my ph levels. I spoke with a couple stores and they all suggested i hold off for a bit and gave me some suggestions. One of the ones which also a good friend of mine suggested was a c02 scrubber to help buffer my ph.

I was running the Reef Octopus Classic Classic 110SSS and have switched to the Classic 110 INT as i didnt want to try modding the first skimmer.

I dont think I qualify to be a seller through this site so i am not offering it for sale at this time and please dont private message me. I dont want to break any rules. But i imagine I will offer it up eventually i think. Itd back in its box. And figure i may point here at some point to maybe give some comfort to a potential buyer in knowing that it was first used Aug 14 2022 and removed from the tank on Aug 29th 2022 with only thing in tank being water sand rock and what was left of a 29 day old shrimp.

Hope thr update is appreciated and im not breaking any rules hinting at a future sale item. Just wanted to give an update. Seeing what i believe is diatoms settling in about to do a proper 16-20g water change as a while back i had over salted the tank not realizing my apex probe had taken on bubbles then just pulled water out and until the ato got me back to where i need to be.

Thinking the water change will help recharge some minerals as well and boost my ph. Certainly wont hurt so lets see!

Wow what a weekend! Almost lost my FW tank! Added a uv sterilizer and did a water change and lost all my furcatas and a hatchet over night while everyone seemed fine. Even the rummy noses never lost any color even in the morning when i woke up to a panic full color swimming like pigs in....

But everyone else was breatching hard and hiding i immediately did a water change and some testing and everything seemed to go back to normal... cant explain it... yet! Still working on it.

Anyway the marine tank! So 2 weeks ago i think it was? I was starting to see some algae i think was diatoms? It never really took off it grew for a day or two only marginally and has all but disappeared since. I still have no live stock when i saw the diatoms* i was grtting ready to add a cuc but wanted to see a bit more so i know thered be food... and blanked.

I know and see everyoje cycles with clowns and chems and all but i wanted to go full safe humane and see the earthly cycle. Seeing the tank virtually sterile again is disheartening. And has me feeling like whoops i should have held off on this thread.

I was thinking before i posted this the first half of my cycle is done. I have zero amonia and i have nitrates. I wouldnt be torturing fish by adding them and by doing so they would encourage the rest of the cycle right? So ive convinced myself im heading out this weekend to find hopefully the perfect first 2 clowns.... and a nem.

I know nems are very highly encouraged to wait until the tank is mature. But i want to try it. I want to watch it very closely and learn while the tank is mostly barren and easier to make any specific adjustments.

So if anyone has any advice i would love to hear it even a dont be stupid wait! Is appreciated i will give a like but probably ignore and coke back and say you were right later. But i am here to learn and nems intrigue me more than any coral which i am months away from at the least anyway so i want to explore observe and learn.

Provided i find clowns i csn love expect pictures and the true start of this thread this Friday or Saturday!

Filter lenses came in a few days ago heres a couple more pictures. Hoping to have some time soon to get an actual post with some meat in it.

The nem is doing well. It buggered off the first night to a place i didnt care how much it liked it i didnt want it there. Tried adding a powerhead aimed right at it to try and convince it to move... 3 days it didnt move and the pumped created a crater in the sand so i decided to move the entire rock. Hopefully likes its new place or if decides to move again it will find a happy place more suitable to me and continue to do well!

I have a lot of posting still to do on the build but am about to redo a lot of plumbing and moving of electronics so im procrastinating but added first corals today so thought id share! All the pics i actually dont remember the name of them so if anyoke can id them id appreciate. Not pictured are some still closed frozen hornet and smurfette zoas. First pic i think is a goni? And curious if it brought some aptasia?

Final picture is my nem in process of moving... had been happy around the corner about 2 inches behind where it is in the pic. Was added at 1 month old a month and a week later its decided do move i tjink because ive been messing with the skimmer but who knows... waiting to see where it ends up seems healthy still so thats what i care most about at the moment.

Quick tip to anyone getting one of these smaller RS reefers.... dont do this... i installed the RS slide out control board and tapped in all the electronics... these tanks/cabinets are too small for this.

Yeah it looks cool. Youll regret it. Find a way to make it nice outside the cabinet from the start!

I am currently in the process of working out hard plumbing the return pump adding manifold and moving all the tech out. Then pictures of the whole timeline, tech, specs etc will flood this thread. Just wanted to make a quick psa.

Also if anyone is wondering the frag covered in aptasia is gone. And the rainbow nem finished its move to that rock hole to the left in its picture and is happy as can be....for now.

Oh yeah for those curious i havent seen my anemone in about 2 weeks? Not sure what to take from it. It hasnt nuked my tank so it may just still be vegabonding it... buddy suggested it may be too small to nuke the tank if it dies but he also told me we monitor orp to see things like a nem dying... well readings are within expectations so holding out hope on thr vegabond nem that ill see again one day... everything else is going well.

Lots of algae cycles never a real ugly stage.

Been a while. But hard plumbing time! Not sure if i ordered wrong or was sent the wrong parts but ended up with 3/4 to 1/2 reducers instead of 1" to 1/2. So this last picture right side valve is my terminus at the moment.

Was planning to run that to the UV and have it dump into my refugium. Now debating whether or not to run that off the manifold. I just dont like that valve being a terminus.

Meanwhile heres a couple display pics cause thats what we are all here for.

Just started my refugium 2? 3? days ago. And the algae seen on right side glass has not made a return to the front since. So have just left it for the snails.

Had some fun today routing my Trident drain line and skimmer intake line outside the house.

By the time i got to caulking i was done so it was lazy. I can fix later. Jist hoping the trident drain line is far enough from the wall to not stain it.

Used an electrical box to give a better look from the sidewalk. Ran the skimmer tubing intoba back full of reefspec carbon to hopefully help keep pollutants and bugs out.

The plumbing seems to be running fine thus far need to get some support brackets and install the UV and route the terminus into an overflow back into the sump.... hopefully sooner than later

Being in florida the bad cold we had was great for the tank but how fast its heated up not so much my PH ended up bombing down to sub 7.5 from 8.3 over night. Hanging around 7.9 stable since installing this(4-hours ago) its running through a c02 scrubber thats due for a media change that i plan tomorrow so hopefully can get a schedule setup and get it stabilized!

Added some extra rock wanted more habitat(thats the buzz word these days right?) And the tank is more for whats in it than outside and moved some things around. Still have some more to figure permanent homes for but figured id update and throw in my apex dashboard while im at it!

Have the ATK off as im slowly topping off with a salt mix to get the salinity up. So the tmp probe is seeing a lot of dry time so i am having to monitor that elsewhere. But the heaters have their own built in failsafes as well.

The leather i just added last weekend(or the previous?) And moved it to that cave it seems to really like and im sad to have to move it and make it go back into hiding for a week as i hear they seem to do. Also sad it will be going into back of tank as its been really enjoyable to watch! But the cove it is in was specifically designed to home an anemone. I cant seem to find success with them, they pop in and out never able to find a place they like.

I changed my flow in the mobius app from freef crest to tidal swell and lowered power. Everything seems to be happier for the change... will move the leather soon but not sure im ready to try another anemone yet or not.

Have loads of coraline setteling inand the new rock needs to settle in.

I think maybe in march i will try again and see if it will like the home i built for it.

Have a phosphate problem i got a gfo and carbon reactor on the way but dont intend to run very often. Rather address the real problem which i think is over feeding. But dispite them being really high im amazed at how the algae is receeding from the display. Can only assume the refugium is growing nicely!

Trying to get it ready for sps so i can populate the top of the rock. Sure ill get there just a matter of time!
