Tank is 6-7 month old, had both these when tank was around 2 month old….. Got rid of them both….

Now they are back again and both are on rocks and sand, where as before was just the sand….

They seem to have come when I added rottifers to tank…… Water they came in was green with phyto….. Asked LFS if it was ok to add all at once they said ye…..

zoas keep getting a dusting of diatoms on them and both frogspawn and hammer as well as zoa,s semi closed up…..

How long can the corals be like this before they die off?

Shall I just ride it out or add phosguard to remove silicate and phosphate? ….. Also started with hair algae popping up so thinking high phos even though test showing fine……

Thanks for any advice

Please post nitrate and phosphate numbers (other tank params won't hurt either).
Also, what kinds of fish and how many are in the tank? Tank size? Flow? Nutrient export?

At six months old, those diatoms may be dinos...unless you know your water source has high levels of silica or you are dosing silica.

Nitrite 0
Nitrate 5 was 20 previous week when dosed the rottifers….
Cal 440

Ok, your tank is very new, and unless it's got a lot of corals in there, I don't see the need for you feeding reef roids and AB+ twice a week. Same with weekly water changes.

I run rowaphos 24/7 and it will remove silicates and also phosphate which should help get rid of the diatoms and remove phosphate which GHA can use as a food source (and give you a false zero phosphate reading, I assume you mean 0-0.03 not .3)

It looks like diatoms and a little cyno bacteria to me from the picture, so the above will help, but try and increase the flow in particular to the parts were the cyno is forming

I wouldn’t let the nitrate get any lower (than 5) and there’s nothing wrong with 10-20. Cyanobacteria love low nutrient environments

And with those corals, and your nutrient levels, you could probably dose reef energy every month if that. I use it/reef roids about once every month in a 2000 litre full blown reef.

This may be due to a nutrient imbalance. You really need to nail down that PO4 number. A range of 0.0-0.3 for PO4 is way to broad. You should be shooting for a range such as 0.03-0.1. Cyano seems to love high PO4.

Because nitrates shot to above 20 then came back down to 5 after 2-3 water changes and less food
