My female emerald crab was a total game changer for my GHA phase. Literally scraped the rock clean down to where cerith and Astraea were able to keep it from coming back. I think tales of emerald crabs not being reef safe are a bit overblown.

Very cute cat! Mine has shown shockingly little interest in the tank, I though for sure she’d be a fan based on how much she watches them on the TV screensaver!

I think the females are the better/safer ones.

This is what my LFS told me too. Females were harder workers and less likely to bother corals.

How do you tell them apart All the little wiggly undercarriage stuff looks the same to me on crustaceans. I got 4, 2 murdered my acans they got sumped the other 2 are constantly picking at the rock eating some invisible or super hard to see algae. I figure if they are not caught red clawed destroying something I want they can stay even if they are only pretending to do work.

I'm hesitant to try emeralds again since they betrayed me back in August, those were both males though. I think I'll try a pitho crab or 2. Might get a tuxedo urchin too.

I got 4 pithos a little over a month ago. They work! I did pick the smallest ones with the smallest claws which are supposed to be males. I dont know why that matters but from reading here thats what you want. Well they have all molted at least once and one got huge! And I am pretty sure its female as her claws got huge also. I dont know if thats an issue or what the issue will be so far she is the absolute best bubble algae eater I have found. Ill post a nighttime blue light pic (I know sorry) I was shocked when I saw her and just snapped a pic. They bury themselves in the sand during the day but once the lights start to go down they come out. Every once in a while I'll catch one out during the day.

Other than the skirt (the underbelly), female emerald crabs have smaller claws than males. I would still look at the skirt though, it's easy once you remember the patterns. (The males pattern looks like a slim Jim :winking-face:)

Whaaat!? JK I get it. I just can never tell irl. I had never heard female ec are better than males. I tried to do the sexing thing earlier in life but it was not easy for me. I typically don't like crabs in my tank have had overall bad experiences with them. These Pithos though! These are a first for me and they are great ba eaters. I was on the verge of an epidemic they have done a great job.
