Difference between ph and DKh

Ok I thought I understood this but I think now not so much. I’ve tried reading up on this but can’t seem to find anything on the very basics of this to help me understand. Have not seen any DKH test kits that I recall. And in all my years have always know the only term for alkalinity or acidity was Ph. This DKh is a new term to me and haven’t quite figured it out. Some please help an old man out. Lol.

Is this a term specific to the reef community? Because when I was in science and learned water parameters it was all based on a ph scale of 0-14. Neutral being at 7 and lower ph was acidic and a higher ph was alkaline. Guess this is why I’m having a hard time grasping this concept. How can you have a high alkalinity with a near neutral PH?

I think you are confusing the terms alkaline and alkalinity. They describe different things.

What is Alkalinity vs. pH? Total Alkalinity is a measure of all dissolved alkali in water. It helps buffer the change in pH by neutralizing acids.

DKh is the unit for measurement of carbonate hardness in degrees and Ph is the measurement of acidity. They are both measurement units

Also there are a few test kits out for DKH. I prefer the Hanna tester

I have a background in chemistry, so I will give you the simple scientific explanation.

PH is derived from the concentration (molarity) of aqueous hydronium or hydrogen cations

PH = -log [H+]

dKH stands for degrees of "Karbonathärte" or C03 (carbonate) anions
