Hey everyone,

Got my first dino attack. I have a 10 gallon nano reef. Just started noticing three days ago what seems to be dinos. Phosphates 0 / Nitrates 5 / Ca 440 / DKh 9. Attached are some photos of what I could take with my phone over a small cheap light microscope. I’ll try to get better ones. It started a few days ago and I’ve been just scrubbing the rocks and filtering the saltwater into a bucket with a filter sock and then adding the saltwater back into the tank (I’m gonna stop water changes for a few weeks and do this) while I figure out what Dino I’m dealing with.

I do weekly 10% water changes and I have a HOB chaeto refugium and a few weeks ago I dosed two bottles of purple and pink helix coralline algae which have started forming on the glass and rocks (I’m wondering if I made the perfect storm that depleted the nutrients?)

it does seems to be better in the mornings but there’s still stringy fine strands on the sand and rocks that def don’t go away when the light goes out. I was trying to use a PDF on here to figure out which Dino I’m dealing with but I’m gonna defer to the experts on here. Thank you all!

PS. I’ll try to get better photos. The shapes seems to be all over the place. I’m noticing pointed end shapes but not all of them look the same, maybe multiple types?

Looks that way. Keep it simple. . . . . .
Prepare by starting with a water change and blow this stuff loose with a turkey baster and siphon up loose particles.
Turn lights off (at least white and run blue at 10-15% IF you have light dependant corals) for 5 days and at night dose 1ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide per 10 gallons for all 5 nights. If you dont have light dependent coral- turn all lights off.
During the day dose 1ml of liquid bacteria (such as bacter 7 or XLM) per 10 gallons.
Clean filters daily and DO NOT FEED CORAL FOODS OR ADD NOPOX as it is food for dinos.
Day 5,, you can start with blue lights - ramping up and work your white lights up slowly

No worries with invertebrates and fish when dosing hydrogen peroxide in the DT? I’ve done zoa hydrogen peroxide dips outside the tank but I’ve never done it in the tank. Thanks for your help!

Dose up your phosphate from 0 which will feed the good guy bacteria and they, in about 30 days, will outcompete your Dino pests.

During this time, you need to reduce Dino populations by cleaning filter daily before lights on.Lighty clean the sand surface while lights on, and run through a filter sock, return water to DT.

UV will also reduce numbers.

When you feed the micro-fauna and limit Dino populations, they leave, just on their own and will stay gone unless nutrients bottom out again.
